Olde English Charm In The Rocky Mountains

Last week we decided to go to Banff for a short visit, because why not? Terry hasn’t had much work lately, which is ok by me. Yeah, less money but, MORE ADVENTURES.

I looked around on Expedia, because I really didn’t feel like paying a lot for a hotel room this time. Heck, we’re still recovering from the College Road Trip #2, so no added financial stress is needed thank you very much. I found great reviews and a great price of $122 for one night at The GeorgeTown Inn in the city of Canmore, which is about a 10 minute drive from Banff.

 The GeorgeTown Inn, Canmore, Alberta

The GeorgeTown Inn

What a fantastic find! The Georgetown Inn has that little bit of Olde English Charm that’s kind of fun here in Canada. We love that stuff! Canmore was a mining town way back, but when the mines shut down there wasn’t much else for it to survive, that is, until the 1984 Calgary Olympics.  Canmore is now home to the Canadian Nordic Centre where athletes live and train for cross country skiing and other Olympic sports. That Olympics saved the town, and wow…I wish I bought property back then because now it’s a booming mountain town that’s pretty expensive to live in. Gas is at least 10 cents a litre more, and housing is outrageously priced. C’est la vie! At least they have great hotels and inns to stay in, like The Georgetown Inn.

The Georgetown Inn looks like it might be an older property, but is in fact only about 15 years old. So it has all the modern amenities you need with the look and feel of staying in the English countryside.

This is a shot of the patio, it’s so PRETTY!

And Hellooooooo, there’s an english phone booth here!
The GeorgeTown Inn.jpg

As soon as you walk in the lobby, you know this is gonna be GREAT.

The GeorgeTown Inn Lobby

Where do you get these English furniture items? I’d like to know, seriously. Is there an Ole English Shop where you can buy these things?

The GeorgeTown Inn1.jpg

Our room was so quaint and amazing. As soon as you walk in, you notice that there’s a tea pot with cookies left for you.

King Bed:

And a fireplace! How cool is that! Too bad this menopausal lady can’t stand heat, but hey! Still pretty cool!

The GeorgeTown Inn.jpg

The bathroom and tub are pretty nice too!

 The GeorgeTown Inn.jpg

The Pub is called The Miners Lamp Pub, and WOW what a great spot to eat!

 The GeorgeTown Inn.jpg

They apparently have the best fish and chips EVER, but we arrived too late for dinner. But, we had breakfast there the next morning and it was SO SO GOOD.

 The GeorgeTown Inn.jpg
I had the Bacon and Berry pancakes, and YUMMMMMmmmmmm! I couldn’t finish this portion, but even then I was full until 3pm easy.

The Georgetown Inn is a lovely place to stay if you’re visiting the Banff area, and I highly recommend it! The staff were very friendly and very helpful. We will definitely be back soon! In fact, we were talking about taking Marky here when she comes home for Christmas, because she enjoys places like this that have all the little charms of England.

Plus with views like this, how can you go wrong?

Have you stayed at The Georgetown Inn in Canmore? What other hotels in the Banff/Canmore area are great? Let me know! We are of course scheming and planning another trip, because the mountains are always calling!

Milk Makeup Holographic Stick Supernova is the perfect Highlighter to wear when visiting flowers and butterflies

On the last day of summer 2016, Terry and I decided to go visit the Alberta Devonian Botanic Garden. The Devonian Botanic Garden is Canada’s most northerly botanical garden. It was established in 1959 by the University of Alberta, and is located near the town of Devon which is about a 15 minute drive southwest of Edmonton. We haven’t been there for ages, and had never been there to see what fall looks like. We weren’t disappointed at all!

 photo SAM_4217.jpg

Boy, do I love fall. But to be honest it sure arrived pretty early in Edmonton. I think it’s because we had such an early spring. Spring was a good month early this year. I sure hope the early fall doesn’t mean an early winter! I want fall to last a little bit longer please.

 photo IMG_1839.jpg

Not a lot of flowers still blooming right now as you can imagine, but I found a few like this last day of summer sunflower.

 photo SAM_4202.jpg

LOADS of squirrels running around and getting ready for winter. In fact we witnessed an epic 5 minute squirrel chase/fight which I wish I could have videoed to show you but dang those things run fast!

 photo SAM_4183.jpg

A couple of late blooming roses still around too.

 photo SAM_4230.jpg

I need this shade in a lipstick:

 photo SAM_4228.jpg

My favourite section was the poisonous herb garden because so many cool plants!

 photo IMG_1921.jpg

This is the Castor Oil Plant, from which the poison ricin is made from. You know, the one Walter White used to kill Lydia in Breaking Bad. Evil, evil stuff.
 photo SAM_4232.jpg

Hemlock is sure cool looking, hey?

 photo SAM_4190.jpg
The bright berries of Deadly Nightshade-almost neon red right now.

 photo SAM_4196.jpg

I’m not sure about this one, but I think it’s wolfsbane? It’s hard to tell as none are really flowering anymore.

 photo SAM_4198.jpg

The Devonian Botanic Garden has an amazing indoor Butterfly Garden that’s full of all kinds of exotic butterflies. It’s SO COOL you guys. I made a new butterfly buddy haha!

 photo IMG_1879.jpg

They’re all over the trees!  ALL. OVER.

And there’s also a lot of them flying around looking for some place to land like your head, so I had to take protective measures haha!

 photo IMG_1918.png

This guy was HUGE and just napping on the ground. He was bigger than my hand that’s for sure.

When we were on the College Road Trip #2, Marky and I discovered the brand Milk Makeup in San Francisco. It’s an edgy, runway to everyday makeup brand that’s natural. So many cool products, meant for quick application that you can take with you and apply on the go. And of course, it’s not available in Canada. WHY Sephora.

One swatch of the Milk Makeup Holographic Stick Supernova and BOOM we both bought one.

Milk Makeup Holographic Stick Supernova

It’s SO pretty. An iridescent lavender that shifts blue-it’s gorgeous and unlike any highlighter I have ever seen before. At first I thought I was too old to wear it, but I was wrong. It matches my hair and looks so pretty when worn with pink blushes. The best way to apply it is to rub some onto your fingers and tap wherever you want to look like you were kissed by a unicorn. And it lasts pretty well too for a cream highlighter. I’ve already told Marky that she needs to order me a backup!

And that was my week! Fall, butterflies, and highlighters! Happy Friday all! I’m going to make soup for dinner today! I’m so happy it’s finally cooler! Any fun adventures planned for this weekend? I’m thinking of going to the mountains-maybe. We shall see!

00Hey!! How YOU doing’ this week? Are you glad it’s Friday? I am! Although, every Friday I go to Zumba, and today I’ll be missing it because my fave teacher isn’t going to be there. 🙁

11219513_10153092143027007_6541165641176371405_n

I’ve said it before, Zumba Subs SUCK…but I do have to get used to other instructors because she’s not going to be teaching in the daytime as of January 2016!! ACCCKKKKKKkkkkkkkk my heart….HURTS just thinking about it. She is so full of JOY when she dances, and I love that about her. She will keep teaching every Saturday at another facility that’s about 25 minutes away, so I’ll be making that trek for sure now come January. I will have to drive for my weekly Zumba Kick!

McDonald’s has PEANUTS toys with Happy Meals, so…..

 photo IMG_3210.jpg

I didn’t get the meal…just the toy PLEASE and THANK YOU hahaha #NeverGrowUp #CantMakeME
I need to go see the Peanuts movie SOON!! When Terry is in town next week maybe! It’s killing me not seeing it yet!

I went on a little Alberta Adventure this week to two towns that have deep, deep roots in the Ukrainian Alberta history here. First stop was Vegreville, Alberta which is about an hour east of Edmonton. If you have any doubts about this being a Ukie town, they’ll be squashed once you feast your eyes upon this:

 photo IMG_3220.jpg

World’s largest Pysanka or Ukrainian Easter Egg, Vegreville, Alberta

Yep, that’s the world’s largest Pysanka, or Ukrainian Easter Egg in the whole world. And it spins when the wind hits it…hours of entertainment as one of my buddies on Instagram said.

When I visit these towns in Alberta, I like to visit the churches-most of the towns in Alberta were started and settled by Ukrainian Immigrants, so the churches are a pretty vital part of the community. I swear my peoples OWN this province HAHAHA!

 photo IMG_3232.jpg

Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Vegreville, Alberta

The Holy Trinity Catholic Church it pretty typical of Catholic Ukrainian churches here with the gleaning silver domes-really pretty!

 photo IMG_3222.jpg

St. Vladimir’s Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church, Vegreville, Alberta

St. Vladimir’s Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church is very atypical for a Ukrainian church! The shape/architecture is so 70s-leads me to believe that this was rebuilt at some point? I don’t know for sure, but it’s pretty groovy looking for a church, hey? Even the domes are different! Btw, domes are the way you can spot a Ukrainian church MILES away…always gotta have domes!

But like most Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Churches, it has a gorgeous tile mosaic on the front.

 photo IMG_3227.jpg

St. Vladimir’s Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church, Vegreville, Alberta

So much work…so much beauty! I’m actually Ukrainian Greek Orthodox baptized…Terry is a Catholic Ukrainian. One day I’ll have to show you my church in Winnipeg…the one I grew up in…and it happens to be the head church in Canada…it’s MAGNIFICENT.

Next stop was the small town of Mundare, which is another Ukrainian community as you can tell by the town statue:

 photo IMG_3243.jpg

Mundare Giant Sausage Statue

Yup, that the largest Kobasa in the world….it’s a memorial to the founder of Stawnichy’s Sausage which is HUGE in Alberta. Good stuff. And if you happen to visit Mundare on a day they’re smoking the sausages, it’s like SMELL-O-VISION around this…thing…hahaha…yeah.

Elk Island National Park is not far from Edmonton, and since we have a yearly pass to the national parks, we stopped in for a bit!

Everything is so frozen there now!

Yup…it’s been cold I guess! Frozen Beaver Dam on a frozen little lake…so pretty.

Elk Island National Park

I don’t get why the park is called Elk Island because it’s all about the bison here! And they are so amazing! These guys were so careful before crossing the highway…they kept looking and checking to make sure no cars were moving before they skipped over…it was amazing to see!

I guess I should talk about SOME beauty products hey HAHA!

Ok, these Yves Rocher Botanical Eye Pencils are REALLY GOOD!!

 L'Occitane Grand Re-opening at WEM.jpg

Yves Rocher Botanical Eye Pencils

Seriously, so many colours and I should probably name them all for you but dudes, there’s like FOURTEEN of them there and it was hard enough peeling off the wrapping from each one…took me 15 minutes I swear so…not happening haha #myteethhurtfrombitingthewrappingoff  AND…I’m too tired to look up the names so SORRY…not really  😛  Honestly, it’s pretty easy to tell what shade is which if you do fancy one of them. Right now they’re only $9.95 and I think that’s pretty decent for an eyeliner that stays put really well. I say go for the crazy lemon, orange and greens! And the teals, if you are a #tealwhore like me and Gaelle @Gaelle’s Journal.

NARS Steven Klein One Shocking Moment Blush Palette

I’m really liking this NARS Steven Klein One Shocking Moment Blush Palette. I’ve pretty much gotten rid of most of my blushes, so this purchase was almost needed haha! I’ve actually never had any of these NARS shades in this palette(some are new of course), and it’s kind of perfect for when I travel. It has a contour/highlight duo and a bronzer too so, easy sell to a blush fiend!

 L'Occitane Grand Re-opening at WEM.jpg

NARS Steven Klein One Shocking Moment Blush Palette

I like it. A LOT. Worth every penny in my eyes!

I happened to be at West Edmonton Mall the other day…why I can’t remember? But I happened to notice that there was a new L’Occitane store being built a few doors down from the current one. And I’ve been told by a little birdie that the Grand Re-Opening is this Friday Nov. 13th, with special promotions going on until Sunday Nov. 15th. It’s a gorgeous newly renovated space that’s BIGGER! BETTER! And there’s some special promotions happening too that you might want to take advantage of fellow Edmontonians:

· From Friday to Sunday, enjoy 15% off any $30 purchase.

· The first 100 customers will receive a free gift with a purchase of $30 or more.

· There will be beverages and a selection of French pastries from Passion de France.

Dudes, I’m going just for the PASTRIES I mean, HELLOooooo! But seriously, L’Occitane is kind of awesome! They’ve partnered with Dress for Success®, an international not-for-profit that promotes the economic independence for disadvantaged women by providing them with professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.

 L'Occitane Grand Re-opening at WEM

For every Star Gift Box sold during the festive season, $10 will be donated to Dress for Success, up to a $120K donation on behalf of L’OCCITANE North America. HOW AMAZING is THAT? So, if you’re at the new store this weekend, buy a gift box!! You’ll be helping and empowering another woman that needs to be told they CAN…which is what we should all do! Make me proud my fellow Beauty Junkies and let’s do some GOOD!!

Happy Weekend all! I hope you have a lovely weekend! And I leave you with my new fave song from The Peanuts Movie, which we dance to at Zumba…it’s so cute it makes me smile/happy cry every time I hear it…my new theme song! Sing OH AYE OH!!!  😀

After last week’s emotional post about my friend, I decided I needed a break. An Adventure! To take my mind off all the horrible stuff going on around me. I love going to the mountains here in Alberta. Heck, if I could afford it, I’d move there in a heart beat. I wish I could. I really do. So, that’s where we went.

And so, I’m gonna spam you again with all the beautiful scenery I experienced last week in Banff. #lovealberta

Banff Alberta Overpasses

This is something I’ve never showed you before. Canada Parks built these overpasses for the animals to help them cross the highways. It’s a seamless forest-y walkway for them, and I think they work actually! You hardly ever see any roadkill in Banff National Park anymore.

We didn’t spend a lot of time in Banff this trip because we really wanted to see Lake Louise this time.

Lake Louise, Alberta.jpg

Lake Louise, Alberta

And yup. It’s probably one of the prettiest spots on Earth. She doesn’t disappoint. Get ready for the money shot.

Lake Louise, Alberta

Lake Louise, Alberta1.jpg

Lake Louise, Alberta

Lake Louise is an alpine lake, and is known for its sparkling blue-green waters. It’s situated at the base of glaciers as you can see.

Lake Level view!

I’m sorry, I just couldn’t stop snapping pictures! I could just sit there for hours staring and thinking.

Lake Louise, Alberta.jpg

Lake Louise, Alberta

Here’s a view to the left. I did turn my head and look around hahaha!

Lake Louise, Alberta.jpg

Lake Louise, Alberta

This is a time I wish every picture came with a smell-o-vision button. The air up there is so CLEAN. So fresh. And you can pick out every single scent that’s there-pine? Wild flowers? Greenery? It’s surreal, and so hard to explain?! I wish I could do it justice, but I don’t think any words can really tell you what it smells like there. You just have to come and smell and see for yourselves!

Moraine Lake, Alberta:

This gorgeous lake view used to be on the back of our old $20 bills.

Moraine Lake is a lot bluer than Lake Louise, and there’s a science-y time reason for that!

I regret not buying this amazing toilet paper holder in Banff. I swear you can buy the weirdest/most amazing things there.

 photo IMG_0868.jpg

I couldn’t get Terry on board with it for some reason HAHA. He couldn’t see my decorating vision! Can you?

 photo IMG_0869.jpg

Found a stocking stuffer for Marky. It’s her favourite word I swear.

Kiehl's Creme de Corps Nurturing Body Washing Cream.jpg

Kiehl’s Creme de Corps Nurturing Body Washing Cream

And a little beauty bonus for you! It’s so DRY in Calgary and Banff. I thought it was dry up here in Edmonton, but every time I go down south and to the mountains my legs get SO ITCHY that I can’t stop scratching like a buffoon. This Kiehl’s Creme de Corps Nurturing Body Washing Cream saved me from scratching my legs off. It’s really thick and lathers nicely into the softest foamy foam ever. It smells very shea buttery too-nice and gentle. But it doesn’t leave your skin greasy feeling at all for something so moisturizing. It cleanses really well too! I love it, and from now on it’s coming with me on any trips for sure. Perfect for this near menopause gal who can’t stand body butters!

You just can’t beat Alberta skies I’m telling you. Nope. No way. No how.

 photo IMG_0871.jpg

And that was my little adventure last week! I hope to have many more adventures to show you. You see, my hubby was laid off at the end of July, and forced to take early retirement. It was a bit of a shock to us, but he only wanted to work until Marky was finished college anyways. He has been still working though for Sportsnet Productions, but as a freelancer. At first we thought maybe he should get a full-time staff position and then we started to REALLY think about it. WHY. Freelance work is the way to go for him right now, so he can enjoy life for a change. It was a scary decision for us-since he’s the only bread winner in the family. But, life is short. And we want to enjoy what time we’ve got left here! Having sick friends really makes you think about what you want to do with what little time you’ve got left here. And we want to have some fun adventures together!

I promise to get back to blogging about beauty this week! I have quite a bit of things I’ve been loving to show you-specifically skincare. And also some decluttering posts too! YUP. Lots of stuff coming at you, so be prepared!

HUGS everyone! Have you been on any fun adventures lately?
