Olde English Charm In The Rocky Mountains

Last week we decided to go to Banff for a short visit, because why not? Terry hasn’t had much work lately, which is ok by me. Yeah, less money but, MORE ADVENTURES.

I looked around on Expedia, because I really didn’t feel like paying a lot for a hotel room this time. Heck, we’re still recovering from the College Road Trip #2, so no added financial stress is needed thank you very much. I found great reviews and a great price of $122 for one night at The GeorgeTown Inn in the city of Canmore, which is about a 10 minute drive from Banff.

 The GeorgeTown Inn, Canmore, Alberta

The GeorgeTown Inn

What a fantastic find! The Georgetown Inn has that little bit of Olde English Charm that’s kind of fun here in Canada. We love that stuff! Canmore was a mining town way back, but when the mines shut down there wasn’t much else for it to survive, that is, until the 1984 Calgary Olympics.  Canmore is now home to the Canadian Nordic Centre where athletes live and train for cross country skiing and other Olympic sports. That Olympics saved the town, and wow…I wish I bought property back then because now it’s a booming mountain town that’s pretty expensive to live in. Gas is at least 10 cents a litre more, and housing is outrageously priced. C’est la vie! At least they have great hotels and inns to stay in, like The Georgetown Inn.

The Georgetown Inn looks like it might be an older property, but is in fact only about 15 years old. So it has all the modern amenities you need with the look and feel of staying in the English countryside.

This is a shot of the patio, it’s so PRETTY!

And Hellooooooo, there’s an english phone booth here!
The GeorgeTown Inn.jpg

As soon as you walk in the lobby, you know this is gonna be GREAT.

The GeorgeTown Inn Lobby

Where do you get these English furniture items? I’d like to know, seriously. Is there an Ole English Shop where you can buy these things?

The GeorgeTown Inn1.jpg

Our room was so quaint and amazing. As soon as you walk in, you notice that there’s a tea pot with cookies left for you.

King Bed:

And a fireplace! How cool is that! Too bad this menopausal lady can’t stand heat, but hey! Still pretty cool!

The GeorgeTown Inn.jpg

The bathroom and tub are pretty nice too!

 The GeorgeTown Inn.jpg

The Pub is called The Miners Lamp Pub, and WOW what a great spot to eat!

 The GeorgeTown Inn.jpg

They apparently have the best fish and chips EVER, but we arrived too late for dinner. But, we had breakfast there the next morning and it was SO SO GOOD.

 The GeorgeTown Inn.jpg
I had the Bacon and Berry pancakes, and YUMMMMMmmmmmm! I couldn’t finish this portion, but even then I was full until 3pm easy.

The Georgetown Inn is a lovely place to stay if you’re visiting the Banff area, and I highly recommend it! The staff were very friendly and very helpful. We will definitely be back soon! In fact, we were talking about taking Marky here when she comes home for Christmas, because she enjoys places like this that have all the little charms of England.

Plus with views like this, how can you go wrong?

Have you stayed at The Georgetown Inn in Canmore? What other hotels in the Banff/Canmore area are great? Let me know! We are of course scheming and planning another trip, because the mountains are always calling!

                                              ME lately

 photo IMG_8655.jpg

I don’t know man, but you know I’m kind of at a loss these days. I research products before I buy. I read some blogs, and also look at website reviews of products before I buy anything. Sometimes, I’ll buy a product because it’s a brand I like and have products that work for me already.

But this summer, I bought a few things that were highly rated and had good reviews, and in the end, they just didn’t work for me at all.

1.Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Cleanser

 reviews

This has an almost 5 star rating on Sephora, so you’d think I love it. Nope. It breaks me out like crazy and dries my skin out. It’s just way too harsh for my skin type. I passed it on to my hubby who has oily skin, so at least it wasn’t a total loss. He likes it fine, but it’s not life-changing as many of the reviewers say it is. Lesson learned: Cream Cleansers are what work for my skin like the Avène one, and also oil cleaners like the Tatcha Cleansing Oil I use to remove sunscreen. No more foamy cleansers for me.

The next two products are from Algenist. I love the brand and trust it, as I have used a few products that worked so well for me. But these two next products were huge fails for me.

2. Algenist Reveal Concentrated Color Correcting Drops

reviews

I bought this when the whole colour-correcting phase was hyped up a few months ago. It’s not a bad product, but it’s so full of silicones. I hate silicones as you know. What happens is that sure, this helps with my redness but it accentuates any dry spots on my face. That and I can’t stand the silicone feeling on my face. It makes me feel like my skin can’t breathe. So, this went back to the store. And in case you’re wondering if I bought another colour-correcting product the answer is NOPE. After this encounter I kind of realized how DUMB the whole crazed up hype was and why would I want to add another step to putting on makeup? Like no thanks man. I’ll just use my foundation only, thanks.

3. Algenist Power Advanced Wrinkle Fighter Serum

reviews

Yup, another Algenist product. To be honest it’s not the product I have a problem with it’s THE STUPID PACKAGING. WHY do companies insist on using a freakin’ dropper as a way to dispense a product that isn’t liquid enough? This serum is thicker-like a lotion, so the dropper doesn’t work AT ALL. I had to dig a q-tip in to get some out and WHY. After a week of that nonsense, back it went as well. So I’ll never know if it is a good wrinkle fighter or not. And come to think of it, this is the 3rd product from Algenist I’ve had issues with. Three strikes means:  yer’OUT Algenist. You are off my list of trusted brands now.

HYPE. BAD PACKAGING. Fake reviews making me believe products are good? Maybe? Here’s why I’m thinking that last one is plausible: I was contacted by a company-can’t remember who, but it was for a skincare item to review. Well, in exchange for the product, they didn’t want a blog post. They wanted me to go to Amazon and write a positive REVIEW. And once I posted that review, they’d also pay me $20. UMMMMM…..NOPE. I don’t do that shady shit. But I’m thinking a LOT of people do.

I think I’m just going to have to be even smarter before I purchase products. What I’m trying to say is this: remember your skin type before buying something someone else likes. KNOW what ingredients don’t work for you, and those that do. I can’t stress these two points enough. If you remember them, you’ll honestly save yourself a lot of grief AND not fall for hype…as much…haha. Oh, and shop at a place that has a good return policy! This is one reason why I don’t shop for skincare(unless it’s something I already use like Avene or Vichy or La Roche Posay) at Shoppers Drug Mart. I’d much rather shop there don’t get me wrong, as I’d love to get Optimum Points instead of silly Sephora Perks. But, at least Sephora will take back my failed purchases. Nordstrom Canada does as well, so that’s a good place to shop if you have the option. I’d wish The Bay would adopt Nordstrom’s return policy because wow, have you checked all the brands they’ve been adding online, like Erborian? So cool! I do not know about Holt Renfrew’s return policy as it’s just not an easy place for me to shop at, so if you know, let us know!

As for hype? Yeah, well that’s a hard one. What helps me avoid hype is again knowing what I like and don’t like. For example, I just don’t do eyeshadows anymore. I don’t bother anymore with them, and now that I’ve accepted that fact, I’m pretty immune to any new makeup releases that involve shadows. Any palettes with them, I don’t care about AT all. Lipsticks on the other hand? GIMME. Also, I don’t follow the big blogs that showcase all the new products. Most of the time I have no idea about new products, until I get an email from a website, or if a trusted friend reviews it. Being oblivious really helps with avoiding hype  😛

Do you rely too much on good reviews as well when purchasing a product? I hope I haven’t steered anyone wrong … and if I did I hope you returned the failed product I liked!

Milk Makeup Holographic Stick Supernova is the perfect Highlighter to wear when visiting flowers and butterflies

On the last day of summer 2016, Terry and I decided to go visit the Alberta Devonian Botanic Garden. The Devonian Botanic Garden is Canada’s most northerly botanical garden. It was established in 1959 by the University of Alberta, and is located near the town of Devon which is about a 15 minute drive southwest of Edmonton. We haven’t been there for ages, and had never been there to see what fall looks like. We weren’t disappointed at all!

 photo SAM_4217.jpg

Boy, do I love fall. But to be honest it sure arrived pretty early in Edmonton. I think it’s because we had such an early spring. Spring was a good month early this year. I sure hope the early fall doesn’t mean an early winter! I want fall to last a little bit longer please.

 photo IMG_1839.jpg

Not a lot of flowers still blooming right now as you can imagine, but I found a few like this last day of summer sunflower.

 photo SAM_4202.jpg

LOADS of squirrels running around and getting ready for winter. In fact we witnessed an epic 5 minute squirrel chase/fight which I wish I could have videoed to show you but dang those things run fast!

 photo SAM_4183.jpg

A couple of late blooming roses still around too.

 photo SAM_4230.jpg

I need this shade in a lipstick:

 photo SAM_4228.jpg

My favourite section was the poisonous herb garden because so many cool plants!

 photo IMG_1921.jpg

This is the Castor Oil Plant, from which the poison ricin is made from. You know, the one Walter White used to kill Lydia in Breaking Bad. Evil, evil stuff.
 photo SAM_4232.jpg

Hemlock is sure cool looking, hey?

 photo SAM_4190.jpg
The bright berries of Deadly Nightshade-almost neon red right now.

 photo SAM_4196.jpg

I’m not sure about this one, but I think it’s wolfsbane? It’s hard to tell as none are really flowering anymore.

 photo SAM_4198.jpg

The Devonian Botanic Garden has an amazing indoor Butterfly Garden that’s full of all kinds of exotic butterflies. It’s SO COOL you guys. I made a new butterfly buddy haha!

 photo IMG_1879.jpg

They’re all over the trees!  ALL. OVER.

And there’s also a lot of them flying around looking for some place to land like your head, so I had to take protective measures haha!

 photo IMG_1918.png

This guy was HUGE and just napping on the ground. He was bigger than my hand that’s for sure.

MILK MAKEUP Holographic Stick Supernova

MILK MAKEUP Holographic Stick Supernova

When we were on the College Road Trip #2, Marky and I discovered the brand Milk Makeup in San Francisco. It’s an edgy, runway to everyday makeup brand that’s natural. So many cool products, meant for quick application that you can take with you and apply on the go. And of course, it’s not available in Canada. WHY Sephora.

One swatch of the Milk Makeup Holographic Stick Supernova and BOOM we both bought one.

Milk Makeup Holographic Stick Supernova

It’s SO pretty. An iridescent lavender that shifts blue-it’s gorgeous and unlike any highlighter I have ever seen before. At first I thought I was too old to wear it, but I was wrong. It matches my hair and looks so pretty when worn with pink blushes. The best way to apply it is to rub some onto your fingers and tap wherever you want to look like you were kissed by a unicorn. And it lasts pretty well too for a cream highlighter. I’ve already told Marky that she needs to order me a backup!

Milk Makeup Holographic Stick Supernova

And that was my week! Fall, butterflies, and highlighters! Happy Friday all! I’m going to make soup for dinner today! I’m so happy it’s finally cooler! Any fun adventures planned for this weekend? I’m thinking of going to the mountains-maybe. We shall see!

I’m a reformed cereal addict. I’m a GENX kid, so we grew up eating sugary cereals in front of the TV. Often as supper if your parents weren’t home, which they weren’t most of the time. Honeycomb? YUM. Or even just a bowl of Cornflakes with some sugar sprinkled on top because WHY NOT….ahhh, the clueless days of eating in the 70s haha.

Cereal from the supermarkets is just so BAD FOR YOU. Anybody else notice that about 2 hours after eating a sugary cereal you are STARVING again? Yeah, that’s the sugar crash happening. And so, I never touch the stuff all that much. To be honest, in our house, cereal is more of a treat snack since it’s by no means a healthy breakfast that keeps you going.

Mixed.ca Makes Cereal A Healthy Breakfast Option

BUT….now cereal has made a healthy comeback and I’m all over it! I’ve kinda’ missed it to be honest! You can now get a healthy, delicious and customized blend of cereal thanks to the online boutique of Mixit.ca. The Montreal-based company delivers stylishly packaged tubes that contain personalized cereal mixes you’ve created from a variety of grains, nuts, seeds and unique freeze-dried fruits. I was really excited to get the chance to try a Mixit.ca cereal!

My cereal form Mixit.ca is AWESOME.

Mixit.ca.jpg

Mixit.ca

I picked my base of High Fiber Oatmeal and added some extra protein(to keep my tummy full longer and prevent that cereal crash). Then I added some dates and pistachios and it’s SO GOOD YOU GUYS. I eat mine with some Soy Vanilla Milk and it’s one of the best breakfasts ever.

Mixit.ca.jpg

Mixit.ca

And Mixit.ca will print your name on the back of the tube! Or you can name your fantastic cereal creation, like UNICORN POWER. That’s my next cereal name btw  😛   And you get to pick the pattern on the package tube too -so many cute patterns to choose from! I plan on collecting them all….

Mixit.ca

Mixit.ca

Price varies on how many cereal add-ins you pick. I think this one cost $17.99 and yeah, it’s a bit pricey, I won’t deny it. With delivery it’s around $30. For cereal Tracy, ARE YOU CRAZY? Well yes, but that’s besides the point HAHA. I like this idea of making my own cereal a LOT, so I’m willing to pay for it. I don’t eat cereal every day, so for me this tube will last a couple of months. Plus, there’s just me and the hubby to feed in this house. If I had 4 kids yeah, nope this isn’t smart or affordable. However, if you order 6 tubes, you’ll get free shipping at least. But for me, I think Mixit.ca is such a great idea, and it makes cereal fun, tasty and healthy again. I’ll order and pay for it on my own yesiree I will. Order yours HERE.

What do you think of custom cereals? I’m a huge fan of the idea! I like having some variety and options for breakfasts as I get bored eating the same thing every day. And I’m a lazy breakfast lover…if it takes too much time and effort to make I just won’t do it.

It’s pretty RARE for me when I meet an award winning, cult fave beauty product and think: DANG, HOW HAVE I SURVIVED THIS LONG ON EARTH WITHOUT THIS STUFF?
