When Marky was packing her stuff to take to California, I’m telling ya’-it was a nightmare. Her first reaction was to take EVERYTHING, which was of course impossible since we were driving down in a Nissan Altima. Everything wasn’t going to fit. In the end, I told her to pack as if she was going on a 4 month trip, meaning take half of everything you own LOL. Mama will bring the rest when she comes to visit HA.

Anyways, her makeup! Picking and choosing what to take was painful. In the end, she did a great job of choosing what she actually uses. And truth be told, sometimes I think I could use a good move like that to edit my makeup collection down to what I really use. And I just might do that pretty soon here actually-not move, but edit and pare down. I’m kind of getting tired of all the things around here. Too much stuff! Especially makeup brushes. I have so many at the moment, and only use like 4? Maybe 5? Okay, 6. Something like that anyways haha. Which is why I kind of think that the Sephora Collection All for One Full Magnetic Travel Brush Set($70.00) is kind of cool.

Sephora Collection All for One Full Magnetic Travel Brush Set.jpg

Sephora Collection All for One Full Magnetic Travel Brush Set

Sephora Collection All for One Full Magnetic Travel Brush Set is a six-piece brush set that has a pretty cool case. It’s not really tiny like some travel makeup brush sets. This one is pretty decent in size with a mesh pocket that you could actually fit your daily makeup in there if you were, you know, a sane person and not a beauty blogger. 😛

Sephora Collection All for One Full Magnetic Travel Brush Set.jpg

Sephora Collection All for One Full Magnetic Travel Brush Set

What’s ALSO really cool about the Sephora Collection All for One Full Magnetic Travel Brush Set is that you can switch around the brush heads. Custom, double-headed brushes you create, which for travel? Is kind of awesome you guys.

Sephora Collection All for One Full Magnetic Travel Brush Set.jpg

Sephora Collection All for One Full Magnetic Travel Brush Set

You see, there’s a two-sided magnetic handle-just one! The smaller brushes attach at one end and the larger ones at the other. Just click! and they’re attached to the handle with no wiggling at all. Almost rare-earth magnet tight. Have you ever tried to pry apart rare-earth magnets? GEEZ LOUISE those things stick!
 photo IMG_9688.jpg

Sephora Collection All for One Full Magnetic Travel Brush Set contains synthetic brushes by the way, which truth be told I prefer lately. They are just easier to wash and take care of, and always soft. And nobody’s hairs get yanked out for my benefit. I prefer that to be honest. You get a Powder Brush, an Angled Brush that’s great for blush, and a Foundation Brush, which I think works better as a really big concealer brush. And you get 3 eye brushes too-an Angled Shadow Brush that’s great for crease work, a smudge brush which I love, as I’m all about blowing out eyeshadow on my bottom lash line, and a Brow Brush to fill in brows.

Sephora Collection All for One Full Magnetic Travel Brush Set

Everything you could possible need for brushes when you’re on holidays, right?

 photo IMG_9685.jpg
Here’s a close-up of the powder brush so you can see the bristles. They really are soft and dense, so they do a great job of picking up product and bending it out. I really liked this set a lot. Yeah, you heard right-LIKED it. Marky loved it too, so I left it with her. The Sephora Collection All for One Full Magnetic Travel Brush Set is perfect for a limited-space, dorm-living, makeup junkie college student!

Well worth the $$ I say, but you know, like I always say-watch out for the sales Sephora has! You can probably scoop this up on sale in a couple of months for a great deal if you keep watching. Or pick it up during the Friends and Family sale, which is coming up pretty soon I hear.

Do you have special brushes that are just for travel? Or do you cram all of your regular brushes into a bag and take them with you?

I can’t believe it’s Thursday already. It’s one week I’ve been back now. And only 4 weeks until we go back to visit Marky for student’s day! Yeah, it’s kinda’ soon, but we had to. Alumni will apparently be there for the weekend. Terry is hoping to have a drink with John Lasseter LOL. Me, I’d love for Craig McCraken to be there-the guy who created The PowerPuff Girls and my all-time favourite cartoon ever, Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends. I still miss that show!

*products sent by the lovely PR, thoughts are mine as always!

I have one more Sephora Collection brush set to show you, and I saved the neatest one for last. Well, it’s pretty darn neat to me! But I am old, so maybe what’s neat to me, ain’t neat for you. Neat. Does anyone even say NEAT anymore? Well, they’re gonna now because I’m telling ya, no other word describes this brush set besides NEAT.

Sephora Collection Double Down Brush Set.jpg

Sephora Collection Double Down Brush Set

I think the Sephora Collection Double Down Brush Set($58) is like the ULTIMATE NEATEST makeup brush collection. Yeah, that’s right. ULTIMATE NEATEST…hahaha.

Sephora Collection Double Down Brush Set.jpg

Sephora Collection Double Down Brush Set

Open it up and you see three brushes in their neat little holders there.  The other side has a neat little zippered pocket for whatever neat things you want to stuff in it.

Sephora Collection Double Down Brush Set.jpg

Sephora Collection Double Down Brush Set

AND there’s even a bigger, zippered compartment to hold all that neat makeup you like to carry with you to touch up during the day. Or, if you’re like me-SNACKS. This one is bigger than the one I showed before because you could easily fit a couple of granola bars, some almonds, cookies, crackers, HUMMUS…can you tell I’m hungry? And yes hummus. I found these hummus snack packs at Costco that don’t need to be refrigerated. VOODOO MAGIC I tell you! Hummus that doesn’t need to stay cold! Why hasn’t someone thought of this technology before????

Sephora Collection Double Down Brush Set.jpg

Sephora Collection Double Down Brush Set

So, here’s the even NEATER part about the Sephora Collection Double Down Brush Set. These three brushes here, the Angled Blush Brush, Foundation Brush, and Powder Brush are like secret agents dude. They’re hiding something, like THREE OTHER MAKEUP BRUSHES. WHATTTT????

Sephora Collection Double Down Brush Set.jpg

Sephora Collection Double Down Brush Set

See? NEAT, huh? Hidden inside are an eyeshadow blending brush,  a concealer brush, and an all over eyeshadow brush.

Sephora Collection Double Down Brush Set.jpg

Sephora Collection Double Down Brush Set

AND then hello! You can change these into DOUBLE-ENDED makeup brushes! NEAT, right? Tell me I’m right!

Ok, some Brushy-Close-Up-Time Again!

More brush-close-up-timey:

Sephora Collection Double Down Brush Set.jpg

Sephora Collection Double Down Brush Set

And the dark metal handles-I’m gonna call it hematite because that’s what they remind me of-is pretty darn classy too.

The Sephora Collection Double Down Brush Set is coming with me when we drive Marky down to college in August, because heck! This has to be a great travel makeup brush set, right? And yes, I’m already fretting about what to take for that trip, even though it’s months away. I can’t take a lot of clothes or makeup with me because the car will have to hold most of Marky’s stuff since she’s the one moving. And we have a Nissan Altima. No truck or SUV in this family. Just one, normal sized trunk. And yup, we only have one car. We are not the normal Alberta family I tell ya. Most of my neighbours have 2, 3 cars in their garages and driveways. We’ve only ever owned one car, even when I was working. Sure, 2 cars would have made life easier sometimes, but you know what? You make do. For Mama Earth baby. So yeah, that means I’ll have to keep my bag pretty darn small in August, and this brush set? Neat and perfect!  Get it now at Sephora!

Do you travel light? TEACH ME. Or do you over-pack? How about cars? Are you like me and use public transit if need be, or WALK? Or are you a car-lovin’, gas-guzzling fiend?

*products sent by PR for review, thoughts about one car living are mine and quite rare here in Alberta. But I stand by my one car conviction. It’s better for the planet my friends. And if we all did things that were better for Earth? THAT? Would be NEAT. Also, here’s a fun fact for you: there are more cars in the state of California then there are people in ALL of Canada. YUP.

Sephora sure has some great makeup tools right now that might interest you!

The Sephora Collection Take the Cake Mini Brush Set comes with a Flat Powder Brush, Crease Brush, Shadow Brush, and an Angled Liner Brush. The brushes in the set are cruelty-free and vegan. And you know what else? They’re pretty darn good too! There’s just no CAKE at all so not sure why this is called Take The Cake? If you can figure it out, let me know…
Sephora Collection Take the Cake Mini Brush Set.jpg

It’s perfect for quick touch ups while out and about or travelling too. And there’s even enough room for a couple of makeup products, like oh I don’t know-maybe a BLUSH?  [emoji smiling face with sunglasses] Plus that  silicone case really protects everything! I mean, c’mon-it’s hot pink too. You gotta like that!

The Sephora Collection Fall in Line Brow Stencil Kit($14 CDA) is something that’s great if you really have trouble filling in your brows, or shaping them even.

There are six stencils, and a double-ended tool with a spoolie on one side and an angled brow brush on the other. Just hold them over your eye and fill in with a matching brow powder. Or, here’s what I think they’re good for-put one stencil over your eye and take a white eyeliner and cover your brows with it. Take off the stencil and you’ll have white brows. Then with your tweezers, pluck whatever brow hairs AREN’T white. BOOM. Perfectly shaped brows are yours!
Happy Sunday! Are you watching the Olympics too? HOCKEY guys! I love Olympic hockey. And you know what? I’ve actually been enjoying curling too! HAAAAAAAAAAARD! What’s your favourite winter Olympic sport to watch?

*products sent by the lovely PR, thoughts are always mine, because seriously. Nobody controls MY crazy. It’s ALL MINE. 🙂

As you are reading this I am on a plane with my family travelling to California! We’re going to Los Angeles and of course, Disneyland! This is the time of year we take our annual trip there. Sometimes we’re lucky enough to be able to go during the spring if my hubby happens to go work there for hockey playoffs, but November or early December is when we REALLY love to go. All the holiday fun is happening there so it’s our favourite time to go!

 photo HPIM1295.jpg

Usually I take samples of various skincare items and shampoos with me, but this time I don’t want to and you CAN’T make me no sirree.  I REALLY like some of the things I’m using right now and don’t want to be without them for one week!  So, I’m going to be using the Sephora Collection Deluxe Airless Travel Kit($46 CDN) this trip so that I don’t have to suffer. SUFFER. HA! First World Beauty Junkie problems or what?

Sephora Collection Deluxe Airless Travel Kit IMG_7612.jpg

Each extremely durable, essential travel container is leak-proof, shatterproof, scratch resistant, and TSA compliant and will house all of your travel essentials, including shampoo, cleanser, night cream, body lotion, shower gel, and much more. Apparently, Bubble Bath??? makes the list as does safety pins and shimmer powder. HUH. Guess I don’t go to many places that require those “necessities” to tag along with me…

I needed a new travel cosmetic bag, and the Sonia Kashuk Floral Print – Valet Travel Cosmetic Bag($29.99) appealed to me! I think the bright pink print put me in a trance at Target, so I bought it.

Pretty neat, hey?

So, au revoir my friends! I shall be thinking of you as I bask in the warm California sun. I will. I’ll be missing a good snowfall here in Edmonton though! I hope my good neighbour shovels my driveway for us…Guess I’ll owe him a batch of chocolate chip cookies when I return!
If you want to stay in touch during my trip and see some of the fun, be sure to follow me on my Instagram account, beautyreflections!

Spring is in the air and Easter is just around the corner – what better way to escape the humdrum than to jetset off to warmer shores to enjoy some quality time with your loved ones? Choose some staple items for your suitcase to ensure you will look and feel good, all holiday long.

Casual Day Clothes
Spending lazy days by the pool is a perfect way to enjoy a relaxing break. You can find great casual clothing online – invest in simple shorts and vest tops, or pretty summer dresses that are airy and light.

Evening Wear
A staple black dress is ideal for eveningwear, which can be accessorised with jewellery, a scarf or pashmina and some killer heels.
Floral prints are big this year, brightly coloured and helping to make a bold statement. Try the Moda Floral Print Dress or the Moda Floral Panel Illusion Dress, both at the amazing price of £16 each.
Alternatively, maxi dresses are incredibly flattering, with stripes and patterns bang on trend. Team with a pair of flats or heels for a stand out look.

Whatever your style, you can invest in some beautiful swimwear to suit. From one-piece costumes to pretty bikinis with a brightly coloured sarong, you will be spoilt for choice.
Choose an illusion swimsuit to accentuate your curves and make your figure look amazing, or some control swimwear to smooth any lumps and bumps so that your bod is the envy of fellow beach bods.

Sun Hat
As the spring and summer seasons arrive full throttle, the choice of hats is amazing. Invest in one with a large brim to keep the sun out of your eyes and off your neck, or a peaked cap for a sporty look.
Hats aren’t just there to look cool either; they are vital to protect you from the harmful sun’s rays, so don’t travel without one.

Rather than packing half your shoe rack, maximise space and choose a pair or two that can be multipurpose. A pair of flip flops for around the pool would be perfect, sandals are ideal for evenings while a decent pair of trainers or pumps would offer support for day excursions. Studded sandals or diamante sandals could double up for evening and poolside wear, while canvas pumps, similar to espadrilles, are perfect for comfort and versatility.
If you’re an outdoorsy type, taking some shoes which offer support, cushioning and comfort for long adventures during the days would be advisable.

Light Jacket
Regardless of how warm the weather forecast suggests it’s going to be, packing a light jacket will be handy, should it get a little cool during the evenings, or should you have a bad weather day. A camouflage jacket or a striped blazer for a bargain price of £16 would be ideal to keep the wind at bay.
It’ll also be a useful item to have when you get back home to the cooler weather – it can be a bit of a shock to the system after a week in the sun!

Updating your holiday wardrobe doesn’t have to cost a fortune; it can be easily done on a budget as you can see!

I’m not a huge Tarte fan. I do like the Amazonian Clay blushes, although why some of the new ones need glitter in them is beyond me. I used to love their eyebrow pencil when I was blonde(seems like AGES ago now). It was my HG pencil. I’ve tried other things from them too, but nothing really warranted a repurchase in my experiences.

Around the holidays though, Tarte always comes out with an incredible value set that everyone covets in the beauty world. I’ve always wanted to get one, but every time I’ve swatched their eyeshadows I get turned off. I just don’t think the pigmentation is all that. I’ve actually had a clutch palette from them a few years ago, and the eyeshadows were just bad. Poor payoff, and they faded on me quickly. I don’t know about you, but all it takes is one bad experience with a brand and then I have a bad taste in my mouth which makes me stay away. Guess I’m a little bit of a grudge holder when it comes to beauty! What can I say? I don’t like being disappointed!

So when I was sent the new Tarte Carried Away Collector’s Set, I wasn’t all too excited about it. I took a quick peek at it, but didn’t really have the time to give it a try since we were leaving for holidays. So I left it on my desk.

The Tarte Carried Away Collector’s Set is PERFECT for taking with you on a trip! It has pretty much everything you need inside its own travel case. GENIUS.

Included in the set:

– a mini Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Adventurous (shimmering rose)
– a mini Amazonian Clay Finishing Powder
– 8 x mini  Maracuja Lip Glosses
– a sample of Lights, Camera, Lashes! 4-In-1 Mascara
– Face brush
– 24 Amazonian Clay Eyeshadows in a palette
– and the Adventurer bag

Being a blush fiend, the first thing I swatched was the Adventurous blush:

It’s a really pretty bronze-rose shade that goes with anything BUT has some glitter in there. Grrr Tarte-you and your glitter happy blush elves drive me NUTS. Luckily, if you tap your blush brush, most of the big glitter falls off and doesn’t end up on the cheeks. The way MOST of us like it Tarte, ya hear?

Glitter aside, the shade is really great, lasts all day too. Love it!

Next, the eyeshadow palette, which unfortunately arrived a little damaged:

Which begs the question-Is this good to take to travel with or will they all fall apart? I think it would have been fine if this was packed in my suitcase amongst some t-shirts and such to soften any blows. In a UPS box-well, not so much. And of course it had to be the bright purple shade too that had to get injured, right? MY LUCK.

But remember, I’ve been jaded by Tarte Eyeshadows, so technically when it arrived like that I was all: No Biggie. They probably suck anyways.

I started swatching:

This quad was meh when I swatched, so I assumed I was gonna be right. They seemed average to me and my swatchy fingers.

Wait. That purple is PIGMENTED! A PURPLE! Actually, the whole quad was pretty good. I was a little…flabbergasted.

This quad was good too! Hmmm…. maybe I was wrong? Maybe Tarte wasn’t so bad?

OH YEAH. I was wrong. Tarte eyeshadows are SO MUCH BETTER now!

See that lavender shade and how the glitter makes the shadow look wet? LOVE it.

And finally the greens. Which btw, I’ve been loving since I’m obsessed with everything that reminds me of The Hobbit at the moment. And green is very hobbity, no?

Just goes to show me how much a brand can change in a few years! I hated their eyeshadows before, but they’ve definitely improved since then! I mean they’re not perfect and some are better than others, but they feel really smooth, soft and blend beautifully. And I’m happy to report that they don’t fade either when used over a primer and last all day. I do wish there were a few more mattes in the palette, but I have to say the highlight shades are kind of my favourite of the eyeshadows. They give such an ethereal glow! Just gorgeous!

sorry for the deer-in the headlights look haha

This post is starting to get really long! But I promise I’m almost done haha.

The 8 Maracuja Lip Glosses are sheer yet have enough pigmentation to show up nicely, have a minty smell and taste and feel really moisturizing. And they last pretty well too for me-about 2 hours on my dry lips.

Jena, Mer, Ali, Nuria
Heath, Casey, Anna, Mel

Sorry for those last swatches being so askew, but the tiny doe-foot applicators proved to be quite the opponent for me and prevented me from getting straight swatches. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it.
And, I didn’t take lip swatches of every shade because I thought this post was long enough already so I apologize! I did a take a FOTD wearing products from the kit!

Yup. It’s THAT time of year again. Busted out the Christmas Snoopy T-shirt.
Classy, right? Really goes well with my Alfalfa wings on the top of my head too.
And WHY is my neck yellow???

I’m wearing the green eyeshadow quad, Tarte Lights! Camera! Lashes! Mascara (which is a great mascara and gives nice definition and length) the Adventurous Amazonian Clay Blush and Heath Marajuca Lip Gloss. And I used the Face Brush to apply the Amazonian Clay Finishing Powder to my t-zone. It kind of reminds me of the MUFE HD High Definition Powder actually, but it helps to balance the skin. I don’t have oily skin at all right now, so I can’t comment on it’s balancing abilities too much. But at least it didn’t make my skin feel any drier!

I really, really LOVE this Tarte Carried Away Collector’s Set and I’m kicking myself for not trying it sooner! Holding brand grudges makes you miss out on some great products!

The Tarte Carried Away Collector’s Set is available from Sephora and costs $70 CAN. Do I think it’s worth it? Actually, yes I do! I think it a really great set for you or for anybody on your holiday shopping list. According to Sephora it’s a $665 value( seriously? I think someone needs to get off the meds over there, but whatever). I think it’s a great value though, since I think the eyeshadows are worth the $70, so everything else is kind of a freebie then. I like the small gloss sizes-easy to travel with, easy to put in your purse. And I do think this is a great travel set. The bag is pretty great actually and can easily house everything you need for a holiday. Throw an eyeliner in there and a few brushes and you’re all set!

Do you hold brand grudges too? Share them!

*Disclamer: I was sent this product to review by PR/Company. Love it or leave it, but my review and opinions are my own thoughts and words, thank you very much

Last week we took a road trip down to Calgary for the day, which is about a 3 hour drive. My daughter will be taking a figure drawing class at the Alberta College of Art and Design once a week, so we’ll be making the trip down every Wednesday night for a couple of months.

Because we were going to be gone all day, I busted out my traveling makeup to use for the day. These are the products I know will last all day on me without having to touch up, and I thought I’d share them with you!

Products Used:

early morning tired smile-see the teeth clench?

I know I should have taken a picture of my own bottle, but I am lazy today so forgive me. Just click on the link and you’ll see what it looks like. This is a long-wearing formula, that was developed to withstand intense on-set conditions. It is water, sweat, humidity and transfer resistant. It’s oil free and helps control oil. Truthfully, it is a little drying for me, but not until the 15 hour mark do I notice some cracking happening. The colour matches me perfectly, and my skin looks flawless and matte all day. It’s a medium coverage foundation and a really good choice for the summer if you have combination or oily skin, and as a holiday foundation when you will be out all day and don’t want to touch up.

Stila Smudge Crayon in Kitten I used as my base, and then Stila Kitten powder eyeshadow over top of that. I used a soft brown eyeshadow in the crease for some definition. No eyeliner at all. This combo stayed put from 8:00 am until midnight with no creasing or fading at all!

I used Bourjois Volumizer Mascara just on my top lashes. I’ve learned from mistakes in the past, that when travelling and out all day, putting mascara on my bottom lashes just leads to flakes and smudges- so I no longer do that.

I am wearing just a hint of blush, but one that lasts all day and it’s Rouge Bunny Rouge Original Skin Blush-For Love Of Roses- in Starina reviewed here.  No bronzer, so I look like my real, pale, old self!

And on my lips, a sparkly good feeling lip balm from Clarins. I haven’t reviewed it yet, but it’s awesome. Any lip balm would do, as when I’m travelling my lips need hydration. Lip gloss is also another option too.

And that’s it!! Minimal makeup when travelling is the key to looking fresh all day I say. I also carry a small bottle of Caudalie Beauty Elixir in my purse to freshen up my makeup and give it a boost of hydration.

What are your traveling beauty/makeup tips?
