My Healthy Lungs Story

Believe it or not, I used to smoke. I didn’t start until I was around 18 though, when I started hanging around with friends that were older than me. They were awesome friends, but pretty much every one of them smoked. Back in the 80s, it was rarer to be a non-smoker than a smoker. So, I joined the club. Why, I can’t even tell you. Maybe I wanted to be like my older friends, I don’t know. To be honest, I can’t quite remember why. But it was one of the dumbest decisions I’ve ever made in my life.

For me, smoking was more about something to do with my hands, and it helped calm me. I’m a nervous, anxious person. Yup, always have been, always will be. You know how some people take a drag on a cigarette and put it down to go and do something? Yeah, I couldn’t do that. I’d smoke that sucker fast until it was done and DONE. I was the fastest smoker in the west. So did it really calm me down? Not really. It was a smoky illusion.

My sister was a heavy smoker-really heavy. Over two-pack of cigarettes a day heavy. One summer, her and her hubby came to Alberta for a 2 week vacation with us. We took them to Calgary, to Banff, to Jasper-all my favourite places in my beautiful province.

While in Banff, we hiked Johnston Canyon. It’s not a very hard hike, but there is elevation change of course. Well, near the end of the hike, my sister had an emphysemic attack on the ascent back up. It was one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen. Her face turned so red, and she couldn’t catch her breath at all. She has to sit down, red and gasping for air that just wasn’t getting into her lungs. Her hubby stayed with her as she recovered, while me and Terry finished the hike as fast as we could. I didn’t want to stick around and watch her gasping for breath. I couldn’t do it. It sounds mean that I didn’t stay, but I was in shock and I had never saw anything like it before. She was only 42. I was 25. At the top of the canyon, I looked at my husband and said:

I don’t want that to happen to me when I’m 42. I’m quitting smoking. For good.

And when my sister left to go back to Manitoba, I quit smoking. And never looked back.

Exercise can help you quit

What helped me quit was exercise. I started running. It took me 4 weeks to be able to run a mile without stopping, but I did it! And ever since then, I’ve been a regular exerciser. Exercise helps my nervous personality now, helping me deal with stress way better than smoking ever did. Exercise is so important to keep your lungs and heart healthy, and can help you deal with stress too. The secret is to find something you enjoy doing. I know everyone says that, but it’s true. At the time when I quit smoking, the challenge of running that mile-to get to that goal-was addictive. A healthy addiction. I could see my progress- I was getting better and better at it every day. And that focus really helped me to quit.

I don’t run anymore. Sometimes I get that itch to run, but it’s a little too hard on my aging joints lately. These days, I keep my lungs healthy by doing Zumba, Walking, and my real love which is Hiking. Nothing soothes my nervous soul like hiking does! And, for me, every hike-EVERY HIKE-reminds me of that moment, which will be 25 years ago soon- that I decided to make my lungs healthy again. Every hike? Is a VICTORY.
Healthy Lungs

Even though 90% of lung cancers are caused by smoking, there are other causes. “Pollutants and indoor toxins like radon and asbestos can also cause lung cancer and asbestos in particular can cause a rare cancer called mesothelioma. Here in Canada, while asbestos is not yet banned it’s no longer used in construction, and in fact, gets removed pronto if it’s found in an old building. A lot of people are dangerously unaware that these carcinogens are still around so if you are buying an older house in the US where asbestos is still legal and actually still used, please get it tested for radon and asbestos before you buy. Please.”

Healthy Lungs.jpg

Make a pledge right here, right now to keep your lungs healthy! Nothing, NOTHING feels better than making your health a priority in your life! Once you do, it’ll change everything around you. I promise. If you’d like to learn more about asbestos exposure and what mesothelioma is, head over to Mesothelioma.com.

Take a deep, healthy breath, and do it.

How do you keep your lungs heathy?

One thing I’m going to do is get some plants that help purify the air in my home. I have no plants in the house right now, and it’s time to change that.

I’m a reformed cereal addict. I’m a GENX kid, so we grew up eating sugary cereals in front of the TV. Often as supper if your parents weren’t home, which they weren’t most of the time. Honeycomb? YUM. Or even just a bowl of Cornflakes with some sugar sprinkled on top because WHY NOT….ahhh, the clueless days of eating in the 70s haha.

Cereal from the supermarkets is just so BAD FOR YOU. Anybody else notice that about 2 hours after eating a sugary cereal you are STARVING again? Yeah, that’s the sugar crash happening. And so, I never touch the stuff all that much. To be honest, in our house, cereal is more of a treat snack since it’s by no means a healthy breakfast that keeps you going.

Mixed.ca Makes Cereal A Healthy Breakfast Option

BUT….now cereal has made a healthy comeback and I’m all over it! I’ve kinda’ missed it to be honest! You can now get a healthy, delicious and customized blend of cereal thanks to the online boutique of Mixit.ca. The Montreal-based company delivers stylishly packaged tubes that contain personalized cereal mixes you’ve created from a variety of grains, nuts, seeds and unique freeze-dried fruits. I was really excited to get the chance to try a Mixit.ca cereal!

My cereal form Mixit.ca is AWESOME.

Mixit.ca.jpg

Mixit.ca

I picked my base of High Fiber Oatmeal and added some extra protein(to keep my tummy full longer and prevent that cereal crash). Then I added some dates and pistachios and it’s SO GOOD YOU GUYS. I eat mine with some Soy Vanilla Milk and it’s one of the best breakfasts ever.

Mixit.ca.jpg

Mixit.ca

And Mixit.ca will print your name on the back of the tube! Or you can name your fantastic cereal creation, like UNICORN POWER. That’s my next cereal name btw  😛   And you get to pick the pattern on the package tube too -so many cute patterns to choose from! I plan on collecting them all….

Mixit.ca

Mixit.ca

Price varies on how many cereal add-ins you pick. I think this one cost $17.99 and yeah, it’s a bit pricey, I won’t deny it. With delivery it’s around $30. For cereal Tracy, ARE YOU CRAZY? Well yes, but that’s besides the point HAHA. I like this idea of making my own cereal a LOT, so I’m willing to pay for it. I don’t eat cereal every day, so for me this tube will last a couple of months. Plus, there’s just me and the hubby to feed in this house. If I had 4 kids yeah, nope this isn’t smart or affordable. However, if you order 6 tubes, you’ll get free shipping at least. But for me, I think Mixit.ca is such a great idea, and it makes cereal fun, tasty and healthy again. I’ll order and pay for it on my own yesiree I will. Order yours HERE.

What do you think of custom cereals? I’m a huge fan of the idea! I like having some variety and options for breakfasts as I get bored eating the same thing every day. And I’m a lazy breakfast lover…if it takes too much time and effort to make I just won’t do it.

I’ve seen a few Summer Favourites posts lately like Larie’s and Monika’s,  so I thought I’d do one too even though I HATE summer lol. #HowLongUntilWinterIsBack

Summer Faves featuring Our Theory Of Brushed Rose Gold Watch

1. Our Theory Of Brushed Rose Gold Watch

Our Theory Of Brushed Rose Gold Watch.jpg

Our Theory Of Brushed Rose Gold Watch $125

Do you still wear watches? I do! I guess I’m old school because I love a good watch. And right now I’m in love with Our Theory Of Brushed Rose Gold Watch. It’s simple in design, but yet sophisticated in it’s simplicity.
Our Theory Of Brushed Rose Gold Watch.jpg

Our Theory Of Brushed Rose Gold Watch just goes with everything and anything. I adore the brushed rose gold stainless steel case, and the leather strap is soft and comfortable. The black face is elegant, and wow the glass is shiny! Look at that sky reflection! I love that Our Theory Of Watches put rose gold markers for the numbers too-I don’t care for faceless watches. I need some kind of visual markers to tell the time! And this is a watch built to last with Swiss Quartz Movement too. Our Theory Of ships worldwide FREE as well, and all of the watches in this first Pioneer Collection are classically elegant and Unisex too. Check them out here!

FYSH UK Sunglasses

FYSH UK Sunglasses

If you wear glasses, then you’ve probably seen FYSH frames at your optician. Marky has had 2 pairs of their frames. So when I found out that they made sunglasses now? Easy sell! These are the F-2006-212 Marble and I love them! Right now I just wear them as is with contacts, but I’m debating about getting prescription lenses put in because as I get older, I wear contacts less and less. Find a local retailer that sells FYSH frames HERE.

Biotherm Eau Oceane Eau de Toilette Spray
 photo SAM_3552.jpg

Hands down my favourite fragrance when it’s hot outside, and by far the best one that captures that ocean freshness. It’s aquatic, breezy, and light enough to use a body mist. I’m almost out and will be repurchasing another one soon!

Givenchy Mister Radiant Bronzer

 photo c4279046-0d57-440d-b862-8e86edec4488.jpg

I don’t wear a lot of makeup in the summer, but I have been reaching for this guy. Givenchy Mister Radiant Bronzer is a gel bronzer that has little beads of different bronze shades that burst when rubbed onto your skin. It’s kind of neat!

 photo 86432b5b-0db7-4a40-a012-2272fd6eba25.jpg
I know this swatch looks scary, but trust me it ends up blending and kind of matching your skin tone to give you a perfect summer glow. Nothing orange at all.
 photo IMG_0387.jpg

On days when it’s really hot and I can’t be bothered with foundations, I just use this to even out my skin a bit and slap on a sheer pink lipstick and that’s it.

Wearing Givenchy Mister Radiant Bronzer and my FYSH UK sunglasses! Lipstick is Urban Decay Vice Obsessed(Sheer)

I’m surprised at how much I’m enjoying it! It’s just so easy and you all know I like easy a lot!

NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer

Our Theory Of Brushed Rose Gold Watch.jpg

When it’s not so hot out, I’ve been reaching for an oldie but a goodie, the NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer. I think this is my third tube of this stuff?! It has SPF 30 which is great, and has light to medium coverage that still looks like skin and not makeup. My dry skin really loves it and I give up on trying and buying any other TMs or BB creams. Why bother when this one works so well for me? Right now I’m in the shade Fiji, but I also have Alaska for winter. I hope they never quit making it!

Liquid Lipsticks
Our Theory Of Brushed Rose Gold Watch.jpg

I’ve been really liking these two liquid lipsticks, Anastasia Liquid Lipstick In Soft Lilac and Buxom Wildly Whipped Lightweight Liquid Lipstick in Lover.

Anastasia Liquid Lipstick In Soft Lilac $26

 photo IMG_0035.jpg

These are matte, matte MATTE and a true traditional liquid lipstick. I really like the formula, but it does get a bit dry feeling on your lips after a couple of hours. It’s not bullet-proof and I find that it does kind of wear off a bit on the inner centre of my lower lip. But as far as matte liquid lipsticks goes this one is one of the better out there that’s for sure. I’d love to get another, but my problem with the line is that the shades are so WEIRD. Like how many freakin’ brown and taupe shades does a person want or need in liquid lipstick form? I wish they’d stop kowtowing to instagram trends and just make some wearable freakin’ shades.

Buxom Wildly Whipped Lightweight Liquid Lipstick in Lover $28
 photo SAM_3503.jpg

These have kind of a mediocre rating on Sephora with some people saying they apply patchy. This shade Lover doesn’t, so I’m thinking it might be certain shades that are like that. As you can tell from the name, they have a mousse texture, and take a while to dry down if at all. Buxom Wildly Whipped Lipsticks are not like the Anastasia one at all. They are not transfer resistant. But it’s way more comfortable and I really like this pretty rose shade a lot. The texture reminds me of the Shu Uemura Gelato lip/cheek things that came out a couple of years ago actually. Now I’m wondering if I can use this on my cheeks too! #havetotestthatout

Grilled Veggies
Our Theory Of Brushed Rose Gold Watch.jpg

I love grilled anything, but grill veggies and even Marky will eat them! No vegetable is off limits for us, and carrots are really yummy grilled! And we are trying to eat more veggies and less meat, so bring on the grilled veggies!

Gap 1969 Slip On Sneakers

Our Theory Of Brushed Rose Gold Watch..jpg

I got these on sale for about $17.99 and I love them. So comfy. I have another pair-pink ones I got 2 years ago that are getting worn out because I wear them so much. These aren’t as neutral, but hey the price was right. I see The Gap has their fall ones available now and if I can get them on sale, I’ll probably get another pair because I love them that much! #bringonthefallclothes

SummerSoles Ultra Absorbent Stay Dry Liners

Our Theory Of Brushed Rose Gold Watch.jpgI have sweaty feet, I really REALLY do. Most of my shoes have these liners in them and they really make a difference for me. They peel and stick and depending on how much you wear your shoes, last a good while before you need to replace them. Every summer I purchase about 5 pairs of SummerSoles to put in my summer shoes and I’m good to go. If you’re Canadian you can order them online HERE and in the USA you can order them HERE. And I’m pretty sure they’re available in the UK as well.

When is summer over? 😛  I can hardly wait until it’s over. I know, I know…I’m a freak.

What are some of your summer favourites?

I have a lot of sneakers. It’s kind of a testament to my lifestyle I guess. Even though I’m a chubby girl, I’m an ACTIVE chubby girl. I like to move, because someday I might have limited mobility. #MSsucks

Hiking is one my favourite things ever, and if you follow me on Instagram, then you know that. I thought I’d start sharing some of my fave sneakers for my various fun times, because lordy-I got a LOT of sneakers. And I’m always looking for more! 😛

Columbia Redmond Hiking Shoe

Columbia Redmond Hiking Shoe

Columbia Redmond Hiking Shoe (about $130-but I’ve found mine for under $100 at Famous Footwear)

You gotta love Columbia, right? I mean it’s the brand that just screams hiking and being outdoors. I was looking for a hiking shoe to wear for city hikes, as Edmonton has a lot of hiking trails. It’s kind of cool actually, and one of the many reasons I love living here. The Columbia Redmond Hiking Shoe is a durable, waterproof hiker that has a lightweight cushioned midsole so it’s got just enough cushioning. The outsole has great traction too, which is what I need in case it rains. It’s been raining a lot here lately, and I don’t like slipping and sliding on trails.

The Upper is a combination of suede leather, mesh and webbing, which makes them really comfy. There’s loads of room in the toe box too, which I especially like for hiking. If I want to wear a thicker pair of socks, I can! And if I don’t? Well, they still fit fine. PLUS they are so breathable, because my feet? SWEAT. LOTS.

Columbia Redmond Hiking Shoe

Columbia Redmond Hiking Shoes-see? lots of room for toes to move!

The Midsole of the Columbia Redmond Hiking Shoe is made of Techlite™, which means it’s a lightweight midsole for long lasting comfort, superior cushioning, and high energy return. I have high arches, so I need a lot of cushioning. If my sneakers don’t have enough cushioning, my arches ache like a mofo after long hikes and walks. I have no aches or pains when I wear my Redmonds.

Columbia Redmond Hiking Shoes-

Columbia Redmond Hiking Shoes

I also get blisters really easily (whiny feet or what hey?). Pretty much every pair of sneakers or shoes will give me blisters, but not the Columbia Redmond Hiking Shoes. I’ve had none at all, so YAY! The high backs really help with that blister problem. I have narrow heels for a girl that’s 5’10”.  My heels often slip in shoes, hence the blister problem. But because the Columbia Redmond Hiking Shoe has a high heel backing, my heels are protected and cushioned, and just feel great no matter how long I walk.

Yup! I love my Columbia Redmond Hiking Shoes! I also love the grey and orchid pink colour combo going on. Matches my hair HAHA!

Would I wear these sneakers up in the mountains? Hmmm-nope to be honest. I feel that the outsole isn’t rigid enough and I’d feel every crag and crevice. But for city hiking? Or hiking in the forest like at Elk Island? They’re perfect! Worth every penny! You can order them online HERE.

Do you wear a lot of sneakers too? I’m finding I don’t wear much else anymore. Maybe it’s because I’m aging? Maybe I love my feet being comfy? Maybe. But more likely it’s because I like to be prepared to be active at any time I’m out and about!

As a blogger, I take a LOT of pictures of my face. It’s almost sickening to be honest, and it’s really the weirdest thing ever to have to keep looking at your face on your computer all the time. And it’s even weirder I tell ya’, because sometimes I take a pic and think-THAT does not look like me at all… WTF. Like this one:

Urban Decay Vice Lipsticks

Urban Decay Vice Lipstick Backtalk

I don’t know, but that pic doesn’t look or feel like me at all. I look snotty, aloof. And if you’ve ever met me? You know I’m neither of those things.

BTW, I’m wearing Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Backtalk in that snotty pic. It’s the perfect pinky mauve lipstick. I bought three of the Urban Decay Vice Lipsticks in California, and wow I love them all. Get one of the Urban Decay Vice Lipsticks in the Comfort Matte formula you guys-so comfy, and not drying at all! And lasts forever and a day on your lips too with a nice fade.

Urban Decay Vice Lipsticks.jpg

Urban Decay Vice Lipsticsk: Weirdo(cream, Criminal(comfort matte) and Backtalk(comfort matte)

But the pics I take of my face as a warm up? Yeah, see that’s something us bloggers-or at least some of us-or maybe just weirdo me do! I take “warm up pics” to get into the whole “MOOD” of taking face pics. Smizing takes some practice!

This is usually what my warm up face pics look like:

Urban Decay Vice Lipsticks

YUP. DAT is ME. The REAL Tracy.

What’s the point of all this? I think I’m trying to show you that what you see on blogs, instagram, twitter-ain’t always real. A lot of pics are doctored to heck. I personally, don’t doctor or fix my pics to look perfect -I don’t care enough to do that HAHA. Seriously, that’s really the main reason. And the other reason is- that I’m just too LAZY. Editing pictures is one of the most time consuming parts of blogging that I detest. DE-TEST. I hate it. LOTS. Can you tell? 😛 So, I try not to do it so much. I try not to do much of anything that’s not all that fun. Someone once told me that once something you love doing isn’t fun anymore then it’s time to stop doing it and try something else. I kind of agree. Life is too short to keep doing things that aren’t fun, right?

But every so often, I somehow take a picture that looks like ME-like REALLY ME.

Urban Decay Vice Lipsticks

Chubby cheeks, wrinkles around the eyes and upper cheeks, smiley bright eyes-this is ME. This is what I look like in real life. At least I think so? And it’s a more realistic picture of me. But a lot of the time, this true version of me doesn’t come across in pictures for some reason.

Why? Well, I think a lot of it has to so with the amount of makeup I’m wearing. Compared to that first photo(and honestly it’s not a huge difference, but just enough) I’m wearing minimal makeup. Like very little. I’m wearing Sappho Organics Foundation, which is amazing and probably the most skin-like foundation I’ve ever tried. If ya’d like a more in-depth review, let me know and I will oblige. The brighter lip shade makes a HUGE diff too, don’t ya’ think? As I get older, I notice a brighter lipstick makes a HUGE difference on me. Less bronzer too. Less of EVERYTHING looks better I think. And warmer shades of makeup- everything on my face is just warmer toned in general in that pic.Even the lighting is warmer. Cooler tones and shades seem to age me these days.

And the other thing that makes a difference too? Is how much sleep and exercise I get. I need lots of sleep to be able to function-more than the average person I’ve come to realize. It’s probably because of my MS that I require more rest, but I need at LEAST 8 hours-more like 9 or 10 hours to feel and look my best. And, the more rest I get, the younger I look in pictures, which I assume translates into real life as well.

Less makeup, a pop of bright lipstick, exercise, and sleep! These are the things that make a difference in how I look and feel. And those are the things I’m going to make sure I keep on doing from now on.

What are the things that make YOU look and feel your best? And have you tried the Urban Decay Vice Lipsticks yet? I want about 5 more GEEZ.
