A Tale Of Two Matte Liquid Lipsticks: Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick Vs. Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick

Every time I leave the house to go to the drugstore or to the mall, I swear I see a new lipstick! It’s freakin’ crazy lately, but kind of fun if you love lipstick like I do. Today, I have two matte liquid lipsticks to show you and I guess compare, because one is drugstore being Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick and the other is…I don’t know what is Stila considered these days? I guess mid-range territory? Although, all the mid-range makeup is getting pretty high-end in the money department if you ask me lately. Anyways Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick is the second one I’ll be showing you. Which one does Tracy prefer?

Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick(now, I got this on sale for $8.99, but it can be as high as $12.99) in Nude Flush is the drugstore option. I haven’t bought a lot of drugstore makeup lately, but this caught my eye. Frankly, the other colours looked scary bright in the tube even for me, so I went the safe route picking an easy to wear, nude pink.

Swatchy Time!

First off, this has a weird smell that I just can’t put my finger on? It’s not really strong, but it’s there just so you know. Enough for you to go, what the HECK is that smell?!! And then you wrack your brain for days trying to figure it out, but you STILL can’t quite pinpoint the weird scent. I think it’s like liquorice with a slight floral skincare scent? Or perfume even? Almost as if you sprayed your perfume on your neck, but your aim was off and you hit your lips a bit. THAT’S IT MAN.

Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick in Nude Flush becomes slightly more matte as you wear it? But not completely. This is a thick and creamy formula that doesn’t really set on your lips and never really becomes all that matte. And like I said it moves around, which is ok, because you can smoosh your lips and it kind of refreshes everything. It does stain your lips a bit, but it doesn’t have great lasting power like a true matte would. It’s not drying at all which is cool and all, but if you were expecting this to be matte like I was, well it’s not. I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it either. I’ve also heard that some of the darker shades apply a bit patchy, so if you’re planning on getting one of these, I’d suggest looking for reviews first. I won’t be picking up another, that’s for sure. It’s just too movey-around-my-lips for me and I don’t like worrying if my lipstick has become a moustache, ya’ know what I mean?  😛

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Baci

Man, I love a simpler name. Just call it what it is man: liquid lipstick, not vivid matte, color sensational, dancing all over the place crap. LIQUID. LIPSTICK. That’s it. I know these Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipsticks have been out for awhile, but none of the shades ever appealed to me-until I saw this shade.

Swatchy Time!

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Baci($31) is a dusty, grey mauve. It’s a shade that everyone seems to go nuts for lately. And this is MATTE. MATTE. MATTE. No moving around, no sheen, and no weird smell that’ll keep you guessing for days.

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Baci is pigmented, easy to apply, and comfortable too! And it stays put. It claims 6 hours wear, and doesn’t transfer at all. Depending on what you eat, you may have to touch up a bit, but pfft-it’s not that bad really? And you CAN do that, without ruining your previous application, or causing it to flake off. Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick settles a bit into lip lines, but not all that bad. Your lips won’t look like the Crypt Keeper’s, that’s for sure. This is a real winning MATTE formula and worth getting in my opinion. I’ll be picking up another shade for sure.

What’s your favourite liquid MATTE lipstick?

  • I think I need to try the Stila ones again. I read somewhere they made their formula more comfortable. When I tried their first iteration of this (who knows, maybe there never was a first iteration), I wanted to claw my lips off my face, but everyone seems to be doing fine with Baci, so maybe thats the winning shade? I desperately need something that will stay all day while talking to people at work!

    • Yeah, I remember hearing that they weren’t so good before too. Maybe they’ve made them better? I don’t know, but Baci is great!

  • Aw, pity about the Maybelline one, because I really liked that color. I could probably get over the weird smell, but the moving around is definitely annoying.

    • Same! It’s a great colour. And yeah, it just never really dries down? But I read someone said to blot it down, so I guess that would make it more matte and prob help make it stay put.

  • I’m glad I read your review because I was contemplating picking up one from Maybelline this weekend. I also hate that feeling of lipstick moving around but the scent would have been a deal breaker (although I do like the scent of YSL lip products) The mustache comment is spot on except mine always ends up under my bottom lip while eating. I haven’t jumped on the Matte lippie train completely but the one from Stila is awfully pretty! Love your reviews!

    • It’s weird! Usually scents don’t bother me, but this one does a bit because I DON’T KNOW WHAT IT IS HAHAHAHA!
Thanks! You should try one! They are kind of great!

  • Angela

Haha I liked the maybelline one, but I agree with your review on it. I like that it’s not a “super-matte” matte because YOWZA they can be drying and hard to put on. I have an especially hard time finding a nude matte that doesn’t look like chalk on my lips. I have had bad experiences with those “long wear” lipsticks that look like garbage 3 hours in, so the maybelline’s staying power didn’t bother me so much. The scent is kind of like their other matte lipsticks and after I read your comments, I had to grab it and take a good whiff. It’s flowery but I find it subtle enough that it doesn’t bother me – unlike the NYX lipsticks I have and can’t handle either the smell or the taste of. doesn’t matter what the colour looks like if I can’t handle wearing it, LOL. So I feel ya. Ooo and I did pick up one of the darker shades- Berry Thrill, if memory serves- and you are SPOT on with how it applied. I hated it. When I finally slathered on enough to even things out, I actually hated the colour. I thought it would be more plummy and it turned out more HOT PINK, which itself is not a bad thing if that’s what you’re going for…and I wasn’t. It went back to Shoppers. I actually felt angry the entire time I was wearing it, though to be honest it did have a better stain than the nude one…probably for obvious reasons? I do enjoy the Maybelline matte lipstick formula better though. Thanks so much for the comparison to Stila – I’ve always wondered if those are any good! One day….

    • Yeah the smell is weird to me! I don’t know man it’s just something that kind of bugs me and I usually don’t get bugged easily hahaha! Yea, I heard the darker ones are patchy, and that’s because of the texture, and they are so BRIGHT. They took it back? Shoppers will take things back now? Mine never did!
Apparently not all the Stila ones are created equally though, but Baci is great!

  • The smell on this one, for me, smells like old lady and potpourri. I really, really do not like it. Definitely a lot of floral in there. Anyway, the lipstick itself moves around a lot on me which is another downer. Bah.

  • Totally agree that dusty, grey-tinged shades are in right now. That being said, I LOVE Baci on you, wow. Nude Flush comes across as a fresh, springtime-y shade, and so pretty on you as well.

  • Floral liquorice scent? Ugh I think I’ll pass. Colour looks good on you. So does the stila one actually and sounds much better.

  • Lol, the smell of the Maybelline one…I think I’ll pass 😛 Why they gotta make stuff smell so weird??? Like, who went and said, “OMG GUYS GUYS WE COULD MAKE IT SMELL LIKE FLOWERS…AND LICORICE!”

The Stila is so pretty on you, though! I had heard that they were not great the first time they came out, (like Margo), so maybe they did quietly reformulate it and give it a better shot.

    • I don’t know man but right? WHY.

Yeah, I guess they did because this one is outstanding! And thanks! xx

  • Lily

Eeps!! Anything that smells weird make me gag, especially lipstick. That’s why I have a thing against L’Oreal lipsticks. The scent makes me sick. I mean, they both look good on you, but why the scent? The Stila one sounds better!

    • Yeah, why the scent! Like it’s probably to mask something in there….prob something that’ll kill you LOL!

  • Both colors are so pretty, but weird smells are a dealbreaker for me so the Maybelline is a huge no-go! Do you think it could have just been an off tube?

  • Toya

Tracy, you are one hot mama, you know that? You look downright HAWT in that second pic especially! I like both shades on you but I think the second wouldn’t look too good on me. I know it’s the trendier option but those dusty mauve/brown-leaning shades make me look like death. Or maybe I just don’t know how to wear them…

  • Brian

You look fantastic as always, hope you’ve been well :))

    • Thanks Brian you are too sweet! I’ve been better to be honest…felling a little off lately? I was sick, and it’s ben hard to bounce back for some reason! I hope you are well though!
