Sorry, I’m Just Meh About The Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Concealer

Ready for another Tracy Rant?

I have aging skin and eyes, so I’m not into the whole LOADING UP MY UNDER EYE AREA WITH TONS OF CONCEALER look that seems to be the norm these days. Nope. If you are older like I am, doing all that heavy concealing under your eyes is makeup SUICIDE. Heck, I think it’s not good to do if you are young too. I don’t know why everyone is so obsessed with having perfect under eye skin these days?! I understand wanting to brighten and lighten to look more awake, but making that area look uniform in colour is obscene in my eyes. All that concealing and baking powder is a recipe for making you look older. I don’t get it at ALL. And sorry, don’t try to convince me otherwise.

Ok, Tracy rant over for today…let’s focus. Make Up For Ever has come out with the Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Concealer to correct and conceal “for instant under eye perfection.” See, that’s my problem with a lot of makeup these days-the whole notion of PERFECTION. Sigh.

Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Concealer($32) comes in R shades to colour correct and neutralize dark circles with a peach shade. Y shades conceal mainly, yet brighten and awaken the undereye area. They be yellow I’m guessing from the Y hahahaha. 😛 Also this concealer is supposed to support collagen(sure it does lol), fill and smooth fine lines, and prevent moisture loss with hyaluronic spheres.

I have the Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Concealer in shade R20 that’s for Light Skin tones, and HOOWEE this is BRIGHT and LIGHT.

I know it doesn’t look like it in that swatch, but trust me it’s light and bright! Too light and bright for me, and dudes I’m a soild NC15 right now in MAC talk. I wouldn’t order one of these sight unseen if I were you. I think you need to see the shades in person because they run lighter than you think.

It seems like it’d be a great, creamy concealer, and it looks pretty pigmented when you swatch it. It’s creamier but not as pigmented as NARS Radiant Creamier Concealer, but not as creamy as the Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Concealer. I think it does brighten up my under eye area, but that’s about it. This is not a high coverage concealer at all. For me, this is ok as I don’t seek perfection, but if you want more coverage, I think you’d need to get the Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Concealer in the corresponding Y shade to get more coverage. I got better coverage when I added a dab of the Urban Decay Concealer which runs yellow, so I’m just assuming the same result would happen if you used one of the Y shades here. Also, even though my swatch of the Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Concealer looks creamy, I find it rather drying. But again I am older and am pretty dry lately under my eyes. If you have fine lines and wrinkles, you can be sure this concealer will find them. Look at the left eye in the after pic and you can see my fine lines are more prominent. A powder helps if you want it to not crease and last longer, but I personally do not like doing that since that just makes me look older and wrinkly. Now, maybe I’d have liked this better if I had the next shade up, and that could be. But I won’t be springing for it any time soon. Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Concealer is just meh, ok for me.

Sorry dudes! I know I’m probably in the minority here with this review and that everybody loves it. I just don’t see the big deal. There are other concealers that work better for me and my dry skin, and I’ll be sticking to those. This one might work better if you have oily or combination skin.

Have you tried this concealer? Disagree with me? Let us know if it works for you! It’s good to hear from other skin types and what they think of a product, since I can only vouch for how something works on me. Also, what’s your favourite under eye concealer?

Maybe my definition of perfection is different than most folks, but I think this looks good on you. Mind, I can’t see the settling, but I’ll believe you if you say it finds the lines. I have a horrible time with that as well (always have, actually) and I’m only in my 30s. My circles are quite murky most of the time and lately I’ve found that the less is more approach really is best. I’ll settle for lightening some rather than making the problem MORE obvious. I’ve actually just been mixing my foundation (currently I’m stuck on Lancome nude miracle) with a liquid illuminator, patting a bit of that on under my eyes, and then setting it with my MUFE HD powder and a small round brush.

    • LOL thanks Rach but they are there! I’m 49 dude, so believe me there are lines there and this start to settle in them. And it creases too. I did say this looks fine for me, but for most people this isn’t enough. Everyone ones that clean slate look underneath their eyes. I don’t like the consistency of this too. And that’s kind of what I do-I use Giorgio Armani Master Corrector on the darkness I have, and just use my foundation up to my eyes.

  • Oh wow really! Well I think your after shot looks great. 🙂

I was wowed by this. I didn’t find it dried out my undereye area at all and when I use the right amount (like tiiiiny), it doesn’t crease into my lines. Better than NARS for me.

Good to know how it fares on dry skin though. Was thinking of putting a few of these in my kit and have to be careful!

    • Oh, like I said, I think it’s fine too. But it creases on me during the day. Looks fine for a bit, but after not so much. And it settles into my lines. I don’t like the consistency of it too-it’s rather….gluey…hahaha.
Yeah, be careful for older gals with it!

  • I like to layer this over the Becca Undereye Concealer. It is a bit bright for but looks great mixed!

    • Yeah, see as you get older it’s that LAYERING thing that doesn’t work well! It’s too much.

Great review. I hear mixed reviews about this product; some absolutely love it, while others hate it. I’m in the market for a new concealer and I’m debating between this one and the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer. I’ll have to see for myself when I take a trip to Sephora in a few weeks instead of purchasing online!

    • Yeah, it all depends on what you want out of concealer, and how dry you are. And that’s exactly what I say-try before you buy! We are all different, you might love this!

  • Even for me, packing on the undereye concealer becomes a disaster REAL quick. That “instagram makeup” look is becoming very influential imo.. The NARS concealer was a fave for me, but I’ve been reaching for that Sephora Gel Serum concealer a lot lately–I think it’s my new fave for my dry undereye area!

    • Right? It’s just NUTSO. Need to check out that Sephora one-it sounds like something I’d like!

  • I just got this in the mail and I’ve been eager to try it out! I think this is something I would need to stay away in the winter when my skin is drier and/or mix with a serum like the one from CoverFX!

    • Yeah I don’t see the hype! I don’t get it, it’s ok but nothing special to me. But a lot of people love it, so you might too!

  • I love Tracy rants! haha. Thanks for this though because I was really considering ordering this online but I will pass now. I don’t even need another concealer anyway who knows what I am thinking haha!

    • LOL thanks Margo 😀
Concelaers are one of those things we are always looking for that’ll be better than we have-like foundations. That’s my reason for trying so many hahaha!

  • Honestly, I don’t think layering on the undereye concealer works for ANYONE. I mean, my undereye area is pretty smooth but when I overdo it with the concealer it just ends up looking old and wrinkly and yuck! Sure, for the first two hours it may look good but after that? Nope.

  • I use MAC prolongwear under my eyes. It’s super pigmented but not super thick, so I like it. It does settle a bit, but hey, nobody should be that close to my face, right? I AM pretty persistent about covering my undereye circles (although I don’t really get the whole “HIGHLIGHT UNDER YOUR EYEBALLS” trend), because I have genetic dark circles (THANKS DAD), and if I don’t conceal/depuff well, some frank bitch with no filter (like Little Red Riding Hood, have you ever realized? LOL) will be all like, “WHY LARIE, SUCH DARK CIRCLES TODAY, ARE YOU SICK? YOU MUST BE TIRED. YOU LOOK TIRED.) No wonder the damn wolf tried to eat her!

OK OK where was I, I got distracted. Oh yeah. If i don’t conceal, wearing eyeshadow makes it look like dark all around, lol. DO NOT WANT. I was pretty curious about this, but after reading your review, I think it’s not the type of concealer that I want. I don’t really understand concealers that are supposed to be “buildable/sheer.” Isn’t that what foundation is for??? So concealers should be concentrated, no???

    • Hahahaha you kill me hahaha! I like MAC Prolonger too-it’s a good one, and creamier than this one. Spreads better too.
Yeah I don’t get this bulidable sheer stuff in concealers later, and that’s what this one is. Too many layers under eyes is INSANITY and a recipe for disaster imo.

  • I really struggle with undereye concealer as well. It tends to look crepe-y and just pretty terrible. It doesn’t matter how much I layer, don’t layer, bake, don’t bake… it always looks wrinkly as all hell because I’m just putting a layer over top of my skin. Ugh.

    • SAME. I think it’s so hard when you are pale! Our skin is so much thinner already! And stuff like this doesn’t help imo.

  • I haven’t tried this one yet- but I am curious! I totally agree with you, though- the wearing tons and tons of concealer trend just doesn’t work for me either!

    • It’s such a horrible trend and I wish it would go away. But, I don’t think it will as makeup brands seem to be bowing down to what ever You Tube says lately! WHY.

  • “support collagen”? LOL!!! I think concealer is so complicated, it’s either just great when it works on me, but when it doesn’t work for me it’s all the opposite. The wrong colour and making fine lines even more pronounced is just so much more worse! It looks great on you in the photo though…

    • I know right? Part of me hates when makeup masquerades as skincare. Concealer is tricky for sure! I think it does look ok too, but in real life it’s WAY too light for me. And that’s odd!

  • I totally fell in love with Sephoras new gel concealer. Light, doesn’t settle and oh my dark circles got a kapow without heavyweight look! I swatched the MUFE and wasn’t impressed. Totally know fast lol

    • I need to try that one! On my list! Yeah, me too, as soon as I watched it I was oh, this is THICK SHIT hahaha!

  • Liz

Their old HD concealer used to be my holy grail. I wonder what comes after ULTRA HD.

  • I’m surprised at how small these concealers are.. I got a tiny jar of concealer too from something.. and it’s so small!! FFS

  • Toya

I am 100% with ya on how much concealer kids (I can say that cause all the YouTubers are under 30 it seems) wear these days! It’s nuts and totally unnecessary. What a waste of product! Also, the whole baking this is ludicrous – I tried it ONCE and was like ‘GAHH!!’ It looks so flat and made up and I think it’s a lot more obvious than my dark circles so I’ll just let them shine through a bit, mmmmkay? I’m fine with that. ‘Perfection’ looks weird.

I am kind of glad you’re not feeling this concealer, I wanted to try it but then I found out MUFE is not cruelty-free (which is my new thing). I’m using the UD Naked one and like that pretty well anyway, and I like that it sets on it’s own and I don’t need to powder the undereye – I agree that looks aging! So maybe I’ll just stick with what works, eh?

    • I just am SO GLAD I’m too old for this trend, but you know Marky doesn’t do this either and she’s 22! But she doesn’t really have bags, so why these under 30s do this is CRAZY because I bet they have nothing as well.
I like the UD one a lot too, so yeah stick with it. I don’t see the big hype over this one at all-it’d ok? But not life changing at all.

  • Henna Singh

Thank you for saying that you don’t have to aim for perfection! I am finding that people tend to be in two groups – no concealer or so much that you can’t see their skin. Let your skin show through your makeup, people!

  • Lily

I haven’t tried this concealer but it’s always great to hear something that’s not so positive. When it comes to undereye concealing, I’ve found my HG in the Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum concealer and corrector. I’m still using them! I also use the Urban Decay one, and that one seems to be better than the NARS one for under eye. I think when I’m done with them, I’m just going to repurchase the Bobbi Brown one 🙂

  • Drying! Oh no that is the kiss of death for me. I went out to get this and the Sephora SA convinced me to get the Ultra HD Corrector instead, which I don’t want. I was going to take it back for the HD Concealer…but now I think I want to try the Uban Decay and Sephora Gel ones first.
