My Skincare Fails of 2015

I was up from 8:30 AM to 4:30 AM yesterday? Today? Food Poisoning has killed my sleep schedule dudes. And, I have a headache right now…actually AGAIN because I’ve had one every day this week. #whinewhineWHINE

Sleep-Deprived, head-hurtin’ Tracy is almost as snarky as Wine-Rantin’ Tracy, so it’s the perfect time to tell you about my skincare fails of 2015, right? Right. Now, remember these products didn’t work for ME, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t work for you, and you might even love some of my fails. I’m just doing what I do…sharin’. Ok, let’s do this. : )

Skincare Fails of 2015

Skincare Fails of 2015

A lot of fails, my friends. A LOT. Let’s start with the worst smelling one, shall we? Smells can make or break a product, hey? And this one SMELLS like it belongs in my Skincare Fails of 2015.  😛

Perricone MD Cold Plasma Sub-D

Skincare Fails of 2015.jpg

Perricone MD Cold Plasma Sub-D

A treatment to sculpt and tighten the appearance of skin along the chin and jawline.

Why does every Perricone product have to smell so BAD?! Dead fish and lemongrass is what this smells like. And it has the weirdest texture- like coddled jelly with some grit to it? I don’t know, but it did nothing except break me out along my neck and jawline. I don’t get the Perricone MD skincare love at all? Most things I’ve tried from them in the past didn’t do anything either. I’ll be staying away from the fishy line from now on.

Estée Lauder New Dimension Liquid Tape

 Skincare Fails of 2015.jpg

Estée Lauder New Dimension Liquid Tape

A transforming treatment with fast-acting polymers to help give skin a tighter feel and lifted look.

I got this at a Shopper’s Drug Mart Redemption Event last year, and man it does NOTHING too. Like nothing. Nada. Zip.

And I also redeemed at the same time for its sister product, the Estée Lauder New Dimension Shape & Fill Expert Serum.

 Skincare Fails of 2015.jpg

Estée Lauder New Dimension Shape & Fill Expert Serum

An innovative serum that helps define the look of facial contours and create a smooth, radiant complexion.

Now this stuff works well actually! I notice a lift and definition when I use it. BUT, it breaks me out. Bloody EL shoving silicones in their skincare all willy nilly… 😛 why oh why. Sigh. I can use it a couple of times a week tops without too much trouble, so I’ll use it up. But I won’t get another. But if silicones don’t bother you and you’re looking for a lifting product, then I say try this one. Lesson learned: No more Estée Lauder Skincare for me from now on until they stop siliconing it up.

Etival Aqua Surge Serum

 Skincare Fails of 2015.jpg

Etival Aqua Surge Serum

Found this on a clearance rack at Shoppers Drug Mart for $9 or so, and since I’m all about hydration I thought why not. It’s supposed to hydrate and help with dullness and fine lines. I don’t like it. It’s tacky feeling, and I never noticed any great hydration at all. In fact, my skin felt drier when I used it. Fail. At least it wasn’t an expensive fail like the next one.

Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil

Skincare Fails of 2015.jpg

A next-generation retinoid oil to reduce pore size, improve appearance of damaged skin, and help fight wrinkles while moisturizing and calming skin.
I know a lot of people really love this stuff, but I saw no noticeable difference in my skin after using it, except for breakouts. I even tried Phil’s @MirrorReality tried and true method of applying facial oils and that helped a bit in that the breakouts lessened when I used it, but as for reduced pore and wrinkle size and smoother brighter skin-nope, nope, and NOPE. Lesson learned: Get a sample of an expensive skincare product that has rave reviews before plunking down cash. Luckily last year this cost me $110 Canadian, but I see the price has increased to $131 Canadian. WHY THAT EXTRA $1 SEPHORA, WHY can’t you just leave it at $130? Price Jerk Freaks.

Dior Capture Totale Dream Skin

Skincare Fails of 2015

Dior Capture Totale Dream Skin

An age-defying perfect skin creator that refines skin texture, evens skintone, diminishes the appearance of wrinkles, and increases radiance. This was a PR Sample and am I glad I didn’t spend any money or redeem any points for this puppy. Now, it’s not a bad product as per say, it’s just a way more expensive version of the Vichy Idéalia Life Serum is all. Like a whopping $71 more expensive version. If you’ve wanted to try this Dior one, then do yourself a favour and get the Vichy one instead. Does the exact same thing for a lot less cash.

La Roche-Posay Pigment Clear Serum

Skincare Fails of 2015.jpg

La Roche-Posay Pigment Clear Serum

Anti-dark spot correcting serum – long lasting efficacy, evens out visibly the complexion & significantly reduces the dark spots & pigment irregularities

I love a few La Roche-Posay skincare items, so when I saw this one I thought why not? I used this one for a good month before giving up on it. It didn’t do anything at all for me. I’ve had better results with the Deciem Hylamide C25 Stabilized Vitamin C for sure. And it’s cheaper too. Which brings me to the saddest of my Skincare Fails 2015.

Algenist Genius Ultimate Anti-Aging Vitamin C+ Serum

 photo 406212fe-c70f-4ccb-b13b-9ab6bfaef9c8.jpg

A serum formulated to minimize the appearance of deep wrinkles and to strengthen the most fragile skin texture while visibly reducing the look of age spots and discoloration.

I’m a huge Algenist Skincare fan, and whenever they come out with a new product, I run to take a look at it in person and get a sample. I liked the texture of this so, I ended up getting the full size because my skin loves vitamin C and responds to it fairly quickly. Usually. I used this faithfully when I got it last year. Used it all up even. And it did nothing for me. And I couldn’t take it back because Sephora changed their return policy by the time I was done with it-that 30 day limit is NOT cool anymore when it comes to skincare that’s for sure. And again, wow the price of this has increased a LOT. I’m kind of glad not that it didn’t work for me and I’d want to repurchase it! Thank god for Deciem and their affordable skincare products that ACTUALLY work.

Out with the Skincare Fails of 2015 and in with the new haha! If you haven’t noticed already, I’ve kind of been really into skincare lately, so expect more of that for 2016. I’ll be 49 years old on Monday you guys-it’s time to kick it into high gear! I also want to start exploring more natural products as well, so that’s another thing I’ll be researching too. I’ve actually been trying more natural and organic makeup lately as well and I kind of found some things I really enjoy! Who knew?

What are some of your favourite natural skincare products that you really love? Let me know! I’m making a list!

  • Kendrauu

Interesting read! I’m loving skincare lately, as well 🙂 I have that Algenist serum sitting in my skincare drawer.. hm, I’ll have to see if it does anything for me! I just used up the Philosophy no place to hide serum and it did nada for me!

    • Thanks! Maybe it’ll work for you, but I noticed nothing with the Algenist one. Noted about the Philosophy one! I won’t try that thanks!

  • Lily

Natural skincare? I find that I really like Antipodes. Most of their products work well on me 🙂 The Estee Lauder firming tape and serum didn’t do anything for me either. I decided not to write about it. Didn’t like the dream capture too. I really want to try Luna though… I’m hesitant. I’m afraid I’ll break out as well!

    • Antipodes! Hard to find here, but I’ll look around. Hey, it might work for you! For me it was just another oil that broke me out if I used it every day.

  • Hi Kim! Thanks for stopping by! I love Melissa-she’s one of my faves!
If you aren’t sensitive to silicones like me, then try that Estee Lauder one I talked about-it does a pretty good job. Another thing that I’ve recently tried is the REN Firming Beauty Shot-not bad! My absolute FAVE though is by Tata Harper-her Boosting Serum-that stuff REALLY works, but it’s so expensive. But, I think I’m going to repurchase it because my skin really loved it and it firmed that chin right up. I know exactly what you mean-I’ll be 49 on Monday! The whole sagging thing is probably the scariest thing about our age. That and hot flashes HAHA!

  • Thanks Catherine! Yeah, I know what you mean. It is getting silly lately for sure, especially prices of these potions!

  • LOL thanks dude hahaha, seriously who wants fish juice all over their face? NOT ME. I’ll have to look into Odacité I think I’d like their stuff.
And I am feeling LOADS better finally thanks! I may even have a glass of wine tonight!

  • Sad to see so much failed the tried and true Tracy test 🙁 It sucks when something doesn’t show any results!! My skin has become so sensitive within the last year, so I am having to overhaul my routine little by little

    • Especially when something costs a lot of $$! With our dollar tanking I’m going to have to be really careful this year that’s for sure. Poor you-I hope your skin gets better soon. Mine is at a pretty happy place lately thank god hahaha.

  • Aw, too bad your skin doesn’t tolerate the new EL serum. My mom likes it a lot. But of course she’s never had a single zit in her life…

    • I hate your mom LOL-JK, JK-she’s so friggin’ PRETTY dang it! I like it too, but my stupid sensitive skin won’t let me hahaha!

  • It’s funny, people often post their favourites but rarely their “fails”. That Estee Lauder Liquid Tape sounds really interesting, too bad it did nothing!

    • True! It does sound cool right! Like tape it back up!! hahaha! But yeah, it did nothing! NO TAPE EFFECT!

  • Nadine G

Skincate is a very personal thing I guess. Personally I found Vichy Idealia Serum absolutely unsuitable for me: my face got dull and blotted, the effects I was not happy about. Instead Dior Dream Skin did the work done. I am actually very pleased with it and will invest again.

    • It is! I’m glad it worked for you! I like the Dior, it’s just so pricey and the Vichy one works just as well for me!

  • I’m finding the same thing with Luna! I got it in a mini kit for Christmas and while I think it does help my skin look more even and calm in tone by morning, it definitely breaks me out. And yes, EL’s serums do have way too many silicones!

    • Yeah, I don’t know man, I just can’t LOVE IT like everyone else does! Try Phil’s technique-spray a generous amount of thermal water, then start massaging it in. keep spraying water as you massage too. That helps me a bit!

  • Food poisoning. My god, is there anything worse? Horrible. Glad to hear you’re feeling better though!

  • Angela

First, Happy Birthday!! And second: thank you for saving me tons of money by trying these things out. I have and love the Amore Pacific exfoliator magic powder stuff you raved over. And thank goodness a little goes a long way, LOL 😀 I am also a diligent Vichy user but even that is a bit expensive for my blood. (I spend my obsolete pennies on lipstick, naturally)

    • Thank you! <3 And hahahaha! I love that Amore Magic powder, but I have another that I think is just as good! It might be cheaper? I'll be letting everyone know soon!
SAME…I've been on a lipstick kick lately! LIKE HUGE ONE.

  • I am always nervous testing out new skin care items. My skin still breaks out like a teenager if I do not use my items every day. However, I am finding my skin is more drying as I age and need a new moisturizer. But it scares me to be 30-something and to have break outs again so I think I will stick to what I know. I am really liking First Aid Beauty Eye Duty Triple Remedy which hides my darkness and puffiness ( I know the cure would be more sleep but with 2 small kids, fake it till I make it ) , which is a new product for me and doesn’t break me out! Baby steps!

    • I’ve always wanted to try that First Aid Eye Remedy, so it goes on the list! And yeah, sometimes my skin is like yours, but lately it’s been ok! *knocksonwood*

  • k r i s t e n //

Happy belated birthday, T-Money!! I’m sending virtual birthday cakes and pancakes and johnnie cakes! Cakes of ALL KINDS! <3<3<3 This was an awesome wrap-up. I think it's funny that almost every item was blue or teal!? OMG that Perricone MD Cold Plasma! DUDE I tried that stuff at my local Sephora and almost knocked myself out when I smelled it! I believe I exclaimed to my mom, "OMG this smells like a FISHERMAN’S WHARF!” I definitely did not purchase it, lol! I’m going to go read the facial oil application tip thing you talked about! My cystic acne got so bad about 6 weeks ago that I went to a dermatologist and am on antibiotics, AcZone and Retin-A. I took a before picture and even though my skin is dry and peeling and not the best, it’s a WORLD of difference from what it was the day I started the regimen. I’ve got 6 more weeks before my follow up so I’m not really buying any skincare items, but it’s REALLY fun to live vicariously through you and your skincare adventuring!

    • HAHAHA thanks Boo! I never noticed that HAHAHAHAHA! And YES-just like Fisherman’s Wharf! Yeah, his tip works so good-spray your face with a thermal water FIRST, and then massage it in. I keep spraying water as I massage too. REALLY makes a diff I tell you-I don’t break out from EVERY dang oil now.
NOOOoooo oh no I’m so sorry dude!! You didn’t tell me! I’m glad it’s working for you! Marky’s was getting REALLY bad again too, so when she came home for Christmas, the doc changed her BC pill to Diane. She was on that when she first had cystic acne and it worked wonders. I tell ya, nothing a WEEK her skin started to get better. I can hardly wait for your skin to get back to good again!

  • YUP YUP. EL breaks me out every time. I give up on them. I’ll stick to the Clinique versions from now on. SO much better, and CHEAPER TOO.

  • Yeah, my skin hates that oil. I don’t get how everyone loves it! I think LRP doesn’t do pigmentation products well. To be honest, it makes sense since whitening is harsh for skin. I LOVE DECIEM. That vitamin C is really good. AND HAHAHAHA NOTED-no more willy nilly!

  • I have that Paula’s Choice Retinol! MAN IT IS STRONG SHIT. My skin was peeling like nuts after one use. I should try it again. Powerful stuff man.

  • I love fail posts. Everyone’s always so damn positive on their blogs, but it’s the fails that you need to know to watch out for! haha

    • It’s true! You’re the second person to tell me that! Guess I’ll keep posting more fails haha!

  • Thank god I read this Tracy! I was thinking of buying some Perricone stuff (online) but if it smells like rotten fish, no thanks! I hope you’re complete cured from the food poisoning! xx

    • Hahahaha it’s all so fishy! Some things are worse than others. And it does dissipate, but it’s that thought of rubbing a fish all over your face I can’t shake HAHAHA! And yup finally! It took about 2 weeks!

  • I’ll be certain to give Perricone a good sniff before purchasing. That sounds bad. A Boots powder I had also smelled like fish. Too bad as it suited my skintone.

I recommend Rocky Mountain Soap Company’s Pomegranate Day Cream. I used it as a night cream and liked it.

  • Tracy

Actually I don’t usually use creams and different make-up, but I’vw recently started to use them more frequently and I don’t know about it much, so I found this post by chance and I really liked it, ’cause it was very usefull for me, thank you c:
Now, when I’ll be looking for some skincare products I’ll be more careful 😉
