When you have curly hair, sometimes you need a little help with volume at the roots. I don’t like backcombing my hair. It’s too damaging. And I’ve tried those other instant powder volumizers, and they are so messy…and sticky? But this new Joico Hair Shake Liquid-to-Powder Finishing Texturizer($20.95) is different! This is no ordinary texturizer; the carefully designed applicator sprays the liquid-to-powder formula into a micro-fine mist that is invisible, lightweight and instantly adds volume. No more sticky roots!

The innovative formula of Joico Hair Shake is unlike any other powder styling products I’ve tried. Joico Hair Shake’s “powder base” is actually a groundbreaking, near invisible combination of ingredients like:

  • Malitol – a sugar substitute that blocks humidity
  • Bentonite Clay – for oil absorption, texture and grip
  • Cosmetic Grade Silica – for absorption and density
  • Magnesium Silicate – an odorless powder, for absorption and density

Joico Hair Shake can be used on all hair types, including wavy or curly hair like mine. It gives great volume at the roots and can even be used on short hair like my hubby’s. And it’s easy to use-just shake it, and spray where you need volume. Just make sure your hair is dry-that’s it!  It doesn’t frizz up my hair either, like other kinds of texture powders can. I really like this one-it works for me!

Do you use a powder hair Texturizer/Volumizer? What do you use to add some volume to your roots?

  • Liz

I use an Oscar Blandi texturizing spray that’s decent. This one sounds good!

  • Lily

OK this might be something I NEED!! I only tried Joico shampoos so I might have to see if we have this. I haven’t used anything texturizing before. Wonder if it’ll be life changing for my forever flat hair. LOL!

  • Eyeshadow Addict

Intriguing! I’m also not a fan of products like Dust-It.

  • Hey, this sounds promising, Tracy! I’ve tried a couple of these products but not all of them work for me. Some make my hair tangled-up almost! If this one doesn’t, it sounds like something I’d like to try 🙂

  • This sounds right up my alley! I could definitely use some good ol’ volume at the roots too.

  • Hi Tracy! Would you mind sending/showing me the full ingredient list? I’m very intrigued by your review!

  • Angela

Ooo that sounds promising. I’ve tried a few of those powders – SHUDDER. I have limp roots and fine hair! The result is wild ends and a deflated crown! Catch 22 though…most products that add grip to the hair (which I need) also make your hair feel….so gross!! One stylist used the KM powder on me but didn’t work it into my hair for an updo she was doing for me. BIG MISTAKE. I have dark brown hair and let’s just say I looked like I was from a different era 🙁 Will have to keep an eye peeled for this one if it doesn’t make you climb the walls!!

  • I’ve used dry shampoos to add texture and volume a few times, and it works well on my super fine, flat roots. This sounds like an interesting product.

    • Dry shampoos tend to frizz up my curly hair so I can’t use them to add volume. This works better for me!

  • This sounds like exactly what I need but now I’m terrified because I don’t think we get Joico over here. I tend to just use dry shampoos for texture and volume.

    • I hope you can find it! Dry shampoos tend to frizz up my curly hair so I can’t use them to add volume. This works perfectly!

  • Sounds like I need this! My hair is so flat.

  • This sounds pretty dope! Every since I got my hair cut, I’d been seeking volumizing products. Sticky roots are a big fat NO NO!
