Avène Hydrance Optimale Serum

It always amazes me when someone tells me that they don’t use a serum?! Baffles me in fact. Serums typically have at least 3-5 times the concentration of active ingredients compared to creams! Why wound’t you want that on your face? There’s nothing better than a good serum to target your skin woes: wrinkles, dehydration, redness, radiance-and if you can find one that does it all? WIN.

Avène Hydrance Optimale Serum

And I have found a winner! Avène Hydrance Optimale Serum($44) is a new(well, last year new) addition to the Avene Hydrance Optimale line. It’s the next best option to bathing in the Avene Thermal Spring waters in France I swear.

Avène Hydrance Optimale Serum has the HIGHEST concentration(77%) of Avène Thermal Spring water of any product they make. And you all know how good that water is for your skin-it’s rich in silicates and trace elements, has perfectly balanced minerals, a neutral pH, and as the horsey found out for us-is a naturally soothing anti-irritant.

The other amazing thing about Avène Hydrance Optimale Serumis that it adjusts to your skin’s hydration levels according to its NEEDS. Yeah-it’s a smart serum!

SCIENCEY TIME!

Avène Hydrance Optimale Serum has liposomes-tiny bubbles (vesicle), made out of the same material as a cell membrane. Liposomes can be filled with different things, and in Avene Hydrance Optimale Serum they’re filled with-you guessed it- Avene Thermal Spring Water! Because these water saturated liposomes are similar to cell membranes, they can just slide on into the deep layers of our skin and diffuse that good for us spring water deep into the very core of our skin cells. These liposomes in Avène Hydrance Optimale Serum are contained in a hydrophilic(water attracting) 3D Matrix made of marine polymer filaments, which forms a kind of reservoir on the skin’s surface. It adjusts to your skin’s moisture needs-releasing Avene Thermal Spring Water when your cells need it, all day long.

The texture of Avène Hydrance Optimale Serum is a smooth, light gel that instantly gets absorbed in your skin. My skin just drinks it right up! Immediately your skin will feel refreshed, cool, smooth, and any tightness and redness is relieved. There’s apparently a subtle fragrance, but I can barely smell it-if anything the serum just smells fresh. If any of you are bothered by the fragrance of the Vichy Aqualia Serum, then this one will be more your style. I love the Avène Hydrance Optimale Serum and use it all the time now. My skin looks healthy, moisturized and since I’ve been using Avène products, I hardly have any facial redness anymore.

Oh, and if you want your skin to look healthy, moisturized and GLOWING? Layer some Avène Soothing Moisture mask OVER the Avène Hydrance Optimale Serum! Yeah you heard me, use it like a MOISTURIZER.

Avène Hydrance Optimale Serum and Avène Soothing Moisture Mask

The lovely Janine@BeautyGeeks mentioned this little trick last week in my moisture mask smack-down post and something clicked for me when she said it. I had done the EXACT same thing one day when my skin was extra-dry. I applied a bit of the Avène Soothing Moisture mask over the serum and then let it sink in for a minute or so. Then I applied my NARS Tinted Moisturizer over top, and WOW. I was glowing! My skin looked so smooth and dewy! And I looked YOUNGER. Try it! I almost can’t put on my makeup now without using both of these products first 😛  I’m addicted to the glow!

I know what you’re wondering-do I like Avène Hydrance Optimale Serum better than the Vichy Aqualia Serum? I like them both, and find that they both do an amazing job of keeping skin hydrated through the day. It’s good to have options I say. Right now, I’m using the Avène and loving it. 😀

Do you use serums? Please tell me yes! What’s your favourite?

  • *shifty eyes* I don’t really use serums :/ BUT if I did, I’d be checking this one out! You make it sound awesome, dude!

  • Hey Tracy, OF COURSE I USE SERUMS! You can’t make me give up on them! I’d say EL ANR is like a staple, and I’ve gone through multiple bottles of Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance Serum. For the moment, I’ve been giving the new Chanel hydrating serum a go, and it’s working well (which is a surprise because I have very little faith in luxury skincare LOL)!

  • I just tried the Vichy Aqualia serum and I was seriously impressed by it! So if you say that this one is up to par with the Vichy serum, well then damn, I’ll have to try it.

  • I’m glad to hear this one’s working great for you!
To be honest, I was underwhelmed when I used this. Maybe because I had a wrong expectation for this. Anyway I used it up. It soothes the skin like nothing else but not moisturizing enough by itself (which was my wrong expectation). 🙂

  • oooh a smart serum??? I gotta try! I only started using serums within the past couple years– and I am obsessed!

  • Ooh, sounds like such a kick ass combo! Even my oily skin gets super dehydrated in wintertime, so I may have to take a peek at the serum 🙂

  • Gah! I need to pick some of this up when I go back home to Canada. Avene is a brand I really trust – some of their products were so soothing on my skin when I had eczema.

Ohhhh this sounds amazing. I’m currently using Hydraluron but this one sounds very enticing. Maybe I’ll pick it up this weekend with my Shoppers points!

  • Liz

I couldn’t use both serum and moisturizer when I was super oily with clogged skin – it had to be one but not both. Now it’s more or less a part of the routine, especially with wrinkles on the horizon! I’ll have to give Avene some love after I finish up mountains of other skincare in the arsenal.

I love serums. Hahaha, I would probably bathe in them if I could afford to!

  • Oh I haven’t tried this one and my skin is exactly that, dehydrated and sensitive! Thanks for the review Tracy! 🙂 x

  • Emma Bovary

I want to buy that mask so bad! Hydration is always a wonderful thing in my eyes!
Have too many serums on hand, but will add this one to the list…

  • YESSSSSS MOAR SERUMS. This one sounds good! I’m actually using a blackcurrant oil in tandem with my Vichy serum right now, and it’s nice, too. I think variety is the spice of life, indeed!

  • I don’t trust people that don’t use serums! If there’s 1 thing to invest in, it’s the bloody serum step people! I have used the serum and that specific mask combo, it made me look watery hehe. Works too well! 🙂

Can you imagine that combo on a sunburned skin?
