Moisturising Mask Smack-Down! Tracy Unplugged…Who Wins?

I’ve never done one of these SMACK-DOWN kinda’ posts. I like them! You get a feeling of what a product is like and a comparison of a few similar ones. What’s not to love?

Today I’m doing a Moisturising Mask Smack-Down! I’ve got four to compare for you, and I’m going to tell you my honest opinion about each one. A little different from other smack-down posts you’ve read…I hope. 😛

No like seriously, my HONEST opinion. Like what I actually wrote down whilst testing. TRACY UNPLUGGED. And like it or not, it’s what happens in my mind when I test stuff…be prepared… OH and I’m going to do this Moisturising Mask Smack-Down in order of LEAST favourite to MOST favourite. Because again, that’s how my mind works.

The inner machinations of my mind are an enigma.

Last place and least liked first, just to be clear:

1. Glam Glow ThirstyMud Hydrating Treatment:

 photo IMG_3022.jpg
Tracy thoughts:

“I got this cute little mini GlamGlow Thirsty Mud jar in California in the beginning of January.  I was REALLY excited as I really wanted to try this for ages. BUT. It’s thick. GOOPY. And tough to smooth on my face. AND it smells like PLAY DOUGH. NO LIKEY, even though I have extensive experience in making play dough worms and sculptures. Marky loved the stuff as a kid and we played with it a lot. And… she ate a lot of it. 😀 😀  I am not her. I did not eat any play dough. The smell is UGGGGGGH to me. And my skin? Doesn’t feel any softer or more moisturized after. BOO. Glad I didn’t spring for a full-size that’s for sure.”

2. La Roche-Posay Hydraphase Intense Masque(still love that French spelling of MASK, so extra marks for that):

La Roche-Posay Hydraphase Intense Masque.jpg

La Roche-Posay Hydraphase Intense Masque

Tracy thoughts:

“It’s pale blue in colour, which is cool. Which makes you think that it’s hydrating because blue is the universal colour of HYDRATION, right? But it doesn’t smell like water. It STINKS like herbs? And not in a good way herbal? Medicinal HERBS. Almost dentist office smell. I hate that smell. I hate the dentist. This also feels heavy and a bit greasy on my face. It does hydrate, but UGGGH… the smell…it’s not good…pity. I might pass this on to my dentist because I think she’s the only one who’d like the smell.”

3. Clarins Hydra-Quench Cream-Mask

Clarins Hydra-Quench Cream-Mask

Tracy thoughts:

“Ok, I thought that last one was heavy, but this? REALLY is heavy. And WOWZA it smells. Better than that La Roche-Posay one that’s for sure. But it smells like walking through a flower garden, YET someone is also chasing me and spritzing perfume at me and interrupting the good sniffs of all the gorgeous flowers around me. GET LOST YA SPRITZER.  Like what is that smell? Dior? Gucci? Prada? But wait…isn’t this supposed to be plant based? Why all the fake perfume? Eh, could be to hide the plant smells…but Clarins DUDES…I say embrace the plant if that’s what you really are. FEEL THE PLANT. BE THE PLANT. Also, this broke me out the next day. AND ON MY NECK TOO. That’s just not cool Clarins. Neck zits are like WHY and get an automatic SKINCARE BANISHMENT. WHY WHYYYYYYY…I thought we were friends Clarins? NOPE, not this stuff at least.  It’s way too rich for my skin. But, this mask is probably meant for REALLY dry skins and would work well for that skin type. Will have to find a dry skin friend that would appreciate it and pass it to them. “

#4. Avene Soothing Moisture Mask- THE WINNER HANDS DOWN

Avene Soothing Moisture Mask.jpg

Avene Soothing Moisture Mask

Tracy thoughts:

Hey!! No smell! That’s weird, because all of these moisturizing masks have really stunk so far. And most people with sensitive, dry or dehydrated skin can’t tolerate smells, right? YAY!  This is GENIUS. It’s nice! Not too heavy, and feels good going on. It makes my skin soft, smooth and better than before using it. It even reduces the redness in my cheeks! And no break outs. Simple! Yet it WORKS. LOVE. LOVE.

Avene Soothing Moisture Mask is my FAVOURITE of all of these lovely brands. Seriously, none of these brands are bad…but the Avene Soothing Moisture Mask? Is what my sensitive, dehydrated skin truly responds to and loves. Not gonna waste my money on any other so-called moisturizing masks that stink of god knows WHAT. Avene Soothing Moisture Mask is now my go to moisturizing mask and I use it ALL the time. Especially since I’ve been going to the gym and showering every day. I use this pretty much after every shower and my face is happy!

What’s your favourite moisturizing mask?

*some of these products were sent by PR to test, but PFFFT. You know that doesn’t affect my brain what-so-ever. Honestly, anybody that still sends me stuff you have to give kudos to…it’s like throwing your product in the Tracy Lion Den. ROAAAAAARRRRRRR.  😛

  • Hahaha ouch, I’m so sorry to hear most of these stink so bad :p I very seldom use moisturizing masks, because I kind of trust my serum, oil, and cream to do the job. I do like the Apivita ones that come in sachets occasionally tho! Those are great because you get to try different things, rather than buying a tube of something and then realize you don’t like it!

  • I just recently used up that Avene Soothing Moisture Mask! I liked the performance but mine unfortunately started smelling a bit plasticky towards the end, so I use yours while it’s still fresh, Trakee 😀 My unfavorite hydrating mask is the Origins Drink Up Intensive that everyone loves – I found the fruity apricot smell to be WAYYY too much, and I thought it was kinda greasy too! I do love the Andalou Naturals 1000 Roses one I’m using right now, and most of the Asian sheet masks 🙂

    • I love the apricot scent and it’s really only for severely dehydrated skins, don’t they make the regular version for normal/combination skin? Or you could try the clinique overnight mask with aloe, it smells of practically nothing and it’s lighter.

      • Haha, I think everyone has different scent preferences 🙂 Thanks for the tip, Phil, I’ll check out the Clinique mask! 😀

    • I can’t remember the smell of the Origins one now-I wish my kid didn’t steal it from now so I could sniff it LOL! And yeah, Avene uses no preservatives at all, so it’s best to use it up sooner than later. I use mine almost every day, so I’ll have no problem haha!

  • Lily

Hello Tracy the Lioness 😛 I haven’t tried any of these moisture mask, but my fave is the Antipodes Manuka Honey Mask. I’ve been using the Clinique Moisture Surge overnight mask and isn’t all that bad. Oh, and thanks for the heads up on the play dough smell. No thank you!

    • ROARRRrrr hahahaha! Oh, you know I have that one…kind of forgot abut it. I think I like that one, but it’s not as moisturizing for me. I’ll have to check out Clinique as I’ve heard good stuff about that one!

  • Ah, the Avene sounds heavenly! Love that it’s fragrance-free and effective without being greasy/heavy. Will have to give it a peek 🙂

  • Yes! We know you are always honest, Tracy! 🙂 I’ve used that Avene mask when I accidentally burned my upper lip trying to wax it a home (yes, I am an idiot) and it felt sooooooo soothing!

    • LOL! 😀
It’s petty healing I think-my red cheeks always look better after I use it.

  • Angela

OH man, you made me laugh Tracy. “Neck zits are like WHY” HA HA!! Thanks so much for your sacrifice – I hear so many internet people talk about Glam Glow and I don’t think I’d get past the cost (!), but to hear it’s got a play dough smell just seals the deal for me. No thank you!
But now I’m intrigued about Avene!

    • :D:D
Yeah, I’m so glad I didn’t buy one for the $60 price tag now! It smells like play dough I swear! The Avene one is simple and works! I hope you try it!

  • Exactly!!! SMACK DOWN instantly made me click the link.
I have dehydrated skin so I know when moisturizing masks fail, the LRP one didn’t do shit, never tried the Clarins or the Thirstmud (yet, I have a sample somewhere in the pile.. oh boy to find that) and the the Avène is my favorite out of these 4 then. If you enjoy apricot scented powerhouse masks, it’s Origins intensive drink up for you missy. That stuff rocks my world. It makes me wake up sweaty! That much moisture is brings and God knows I need it from time to time. The Clinique moisturesurge overnight one is a watered down version, good for normal skin but nothing fancy. I’m getting my hands on some of those water pack sleeping masks soon, they better work!

    • HAHAHAHAHA You made me laugh hahaha! The Clarins one is ok, but it’s really rich for me-you might actually enjoy that one. I kind of forgot about the Origins one-I think maybe my daughter stole it from and it’s in California now LOL. I’ll have to get another one! And YES, You need to get a sleeping mask-I have the Amore Pacific one and LOVE it. Actually, I have a couple of them-maybe I’ll do a SMACK-DOWN with those too! :D:D

      • Oh yes please do, I need a smack down of sleeping masks. Apply them onto me while you’re at it ok?
I ordered the laneige and if that’s good, I’ll get myself that amore pacific you rave about 😉

      • LOL hahaha DEAL!
Laneige! I don’t think we have that here! Investigation starts! You know, you’re becoming my skin care guru.

  • I have YET to find a moisturizing mask that works for me. I tried a couple of GlamGlow products just recently and NONE of them were good for me. So yeah, not trying that. Gonna keep my eye out for Avene!

  • Gotta try that Avene one! The Glamglow masks are really weird to me. Most of the other ones have weird chunky bits that are like…ew…LOL. I used a couple of samples, but yeah, I wasn’t really wowed, either. I want to pick up a Laneige mask soon!

    • Yes! It’s the best one!
What’s Laneige! I have not heard of that brand!

      • I keep hearing about Laneige from bloggers based in Asia, Korea and such. Have not yet researched, though. Soon, I guess!

      • Hmmmm ok cool! I’d love if you did a Korean skincare post-although it’d probably be like a week of posts hahaha! Like trends, new products-it’s be so cool! And where we could get the stuff too here in Canada! Maybe that’s too hard though? If you need help I’m in! 😉

  • Liz

LOL, there needs to be a late night show called Tracy Unplugged.

Weirdly, the Clarins mask is more like a regular moisturizer on me. It just sinks in right away and disappears. And yeah, the brands do like to focus on aromatherapy quite a bit. It’s okay most of the time but once in a while I’d get something that makes me gag and it’s like ughghghghffffffDEATH.

    • Ahahahaha, I’d do it too. But there’d be LOADS of swearing 😛

Lucky you! It’s too heavy for me and stinky LOL. But MAN that LRP one STINKS yuck. And why play dough? Like it’s just NO.

      • I had that LRP masque on my list to try until I read your review… well, I guess it’s still on there, but now I’m a little apprehensive. As for Clarins… I adore your assessment. SO EFFING PERFUMED!

      • Yeah it’s just yuck. I wish we could smell these before buying haha! And Clarins is WAY too perfumed lately-like what’s up with that?

      • The French, they love their fragrance. *shrug*

      • ElegantEccentric

I actually love the LRP masque. Not crazy about the scent, but it doesn’t bother me the way it seems to bother Tracy! I don’t find it that strong. I think it’s an “oceanic” scent, as it smells weaker than but similar to other Hydraphase products. (Which, for reference, I can’t tolerate the scent from the SPF cream on my face, but the masque is more gently fragranced.) I will sometimes even use a thin layer of the LRP masque as a night cream, if my skin is being particularly stroppy, as it’s been a good calming treatment for me.

I definitely need to check out the Avene now!

      • I don’t mind the Hydraphase UV SPF 30 scent — that’s good to know, ElegantEccentric, thanks for that! Now less wary about trying the LRP 🙂

      • It’s just not nice smelling to me at all! No likey. 😛

      • ElegantEccentric

It’s in the tolerable box for me, but yeah, not the greatest. I think the only fragranced face care item I use that I love the smell of is the YSL Forever Light serum.

  • I would totally watch a late-night show called Tracy Unplugged! #podcast!

I like that Avene mask too — especially over the Avene Hydrance Hydrating Serum. I used both before a mere two-hour nap, about four hours before I had to do an early morning live-TV segment; I got tweets about my glowing skin after the live segment aired. That’s a win! (Also great for an in-flight facial treatment on a long-haul trip, by the way. Less obvious than a sheet mask… *grin*)

    • LOL hahaha thanks Janine! You made my day! 😀
The serum IS really awesome too-that’s my next post about Avene for sure. Your skin ALWAYS glows! And oh-good idea! I’m gonna do that in March when I go back to California. Lately I get so dry after flying-even my nasal passages.

      • I know how to combat that dry-nasal-passage issue! A friend of mine is the daughter of a veteran flight-attendant mom who has a trick that keeps her nose comfortable, and she swears it prevents her from getting airplane germs too: she uses a Q-tip to coat the inside of her nasal passages with Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Protectant. I’ve tried it a couple of times; works definitely re: dry nose, and well… I didn’t get sick. *grin*

      • MAN YOU ARE THE BEST!!! Totally doing this for sure!! Thank you THANK YOU!!!

      • No problem! Apparently I’m happy to tell you what to stick up yer schnozz! *giggle*

  • Also: I loathe the scent of Glamglow. On my list of NEVER.
