Avène Tolérance Extrême-Skin Saviours!

I know you have all heard of Avène. But do you know the history of the company? I didn’t! And I like history, so I’m gonna tell you whether you like it or not. Because, it all started with a horse that had itchy skin. Yup.

Avène is actually a little town in the South of France in the Languedoc Roussillon region. The Saint Odile spring was discovered in 1736, and its owner the marquis of Rocozels built the first thermal spring water establishment there. Why?  You see, the Marquis de Rocozel’s horse was healed from stubborn pruritus(itchy skin) after a few swims in the spring! We have that poor, itchy horse to thank for discovering the healing properties of Avène Thermal Waters!

Today, the Avène Hydrotherapy Center attracts 2600 patients per year.Treatments include simple baths, whirlpool baths and hydromassage baths, Filiform showers, body wraps with emollient cream, all with healing Avène Thermal Waters.

You all know I was having major sensitivity issues after the college road trip. Avène reached out to me and wanted to help heal my troubled skin. So the lovely PR sent me their products made for intolerant skin, Avène Tolérance Extrême.

Avène Tolérance Extrême

Intolerant skin. That’s EXACTLY what my skin is. Symptoms of intolerant skin are:

-it often stings-my skin can feel burnt from certain ingredients

-reacts to potent skin care-my skin will even develop burn welts from ingredients like AHAs, BHAs, and retinol, or I just break out like crazy

-flares up or heats up as the result of the slightest external stress factor-YUP. In fact, I was told when I was a teen by a dermatologist that I was really sensitive to heat-allergic believe it or not. I was getting terrible rashes after showering, so my parents sent me to a dermatologist. Since I was found to not be allergic to soaps, she decided to stick my hand in a bowl of hot(bearable though) water for a few minutes. And lo and behold, my rash appeared. To this day I still get an itchy rash from hot water. It’s crazy. And when I exercise I turn beet red and that rash shows up, so I have to be careful of not overheating. And so yeah, that also means I can’t really take hot weather. I’m made for cold Canadian winters haha!

All of the products in the Avène Tolérance Extrême line are manufactured in a sterile environment. The packaging of the products is unique. Everything is hermetically sealed to prevent bacterial contamination. The creams and lotions STAY sterile the whole time you are using them! NEAT, hey? Oh, and the Avène Tolérance Extrême has an extremely high concentration of healing Avène Thermal water. There is no added fragrance, preservatives or emulsifiers either.

Avène Tolérance Extrême Cleansing Lotion

Avène Tolérance Extrême Cleansing Lotion

This is a no-rinse cleanser that’s perfect for allergic and hypersensitive skin. It cleanses without disrupting the skin barrier. I gently smooth some on, and remove it with a cotton pad.

Then, I mist my face face with the famous Avène Thermal Spray Water(pictured above). I’ve tried other Thermal Water sprays. ALL of them. But this one? Truly does help heal. I’m 100% sure of that. My face feels instantly soothed when I use it, and immediately redness is reduced. I use it to set my makeup now too. And I even use it to freshen up my wavy hair in the morning. Stuff is pure liquid gold, and I won’t ever use another thermal water again.

Avène Tolérance Extrême Cream

Avène Tolérance Extrême Cream

This is a rich, cream that instantly soothes my sensitive skin. It’s extremely hydrating and never irritates. It’s amazing, and I highly recommend it if you are having issues. I use it every single day now and it’s a life-changer. I put it on immediately after showering too and let it just soak into my face. It’s just a great all-round moisturizer that I’ll always have on hand now.

Avène Soothing Eye Contour Cream

Avène Soothing Eye Contour Cream

This isn’t part of the Tolérance Extrême line, but BOY, it’s just as amazing. Avène Soothing Eye Contour Cream has alpha-bisabosol which comes from Chamomile! It reduces flaking and helps restore suppleness to dry skin. It also stimulates and promotes the skin’s healing process. This eye cream healed the red, burning welts I had under my eyes in a few days. And when that delicate part of my face gets irritated from testing makeup? I use this and Bazinga! the irritation is diminished. Oh, and you can use it on you actual eyelids as well. So, if something has irritated that delicate skin, you can use this. Not a lot of eye creams can be used on eyelids!

I can’t say enough good things about these Avène Tolérance Extrême products. They are simple, effective products that work. Since using them, I’ve come to terms with the fact that my intolerant skin can’t really handle potent anti-aging skincare. At least not right now. At first, the thought of not using things to fight wrinkles scared me. But you know what? My mom didn’t use anything stronger than Avon Rich Moisture Cream. It was just a basic moisturizer, nothing special. She’d slather it on once a week as a mask-that’s it. And she had no wrinkles. None. So, I’m going to finally listen to my mom-less is more for my skin too. And that also means I’ll be testing less skincare on my face from now on. I need to give my face a break! I do have some stuff that I need to tell you about, but that’s probably all I’ll be able to do is mention it, and write about the ingredients and such. But I’m kind of done using my face as a guinea pig for skincare, unless it’s from a brand I REALLY trust.

Have you tried anything from Avène? I’ve tried the odd product here and there, but now I’m completely smitten with the brand and a believer in the healing powers of Avène Thermal Waters.

*proudcts sent by PR for review, thoughts and experience are mine!

  • Aww that poor horse! I’m so sorry to hear you’re allergic to heat: I didn’t even know that’s possible! I’m glad you’ve found products to keep that under control. I have tried a couple of Avene products, but my experience has been less than stellar. Maybe I just tried the wrong stuff!

    • Thanks Sunny! Yeah, their stuff is pretty specific. Most of it is for someone like me, although they do have some anti-aging skincare as well that I’ll be trying at some point!

  • dying over that horse graphic LOL. But yeah, a heat allergy is definitely news to me — thanks for explaining it!

    • :D:D

Yeah, it’s not a fun one to have. I have to really be careful! And having Multiple Sclerosis ALSO makes me intolerant to heat. That’s why I want to move somewhere COOL when I’m old and retired. Like in the middle of Scotland LOL.

  • Oh my god that is the best story I have heard EVER. (Well, okay, not the very best. But it’s close! Choupette wins for very-best.)

This line sounds amazing, Tracy. I have some of the most “intolerant” skin I know of (yesterday I had to gently double-cleanse my lids to get all of my makeup off and my eye area is STILL stinging), so I will be keeping an eye out! Do you know offhand if any of the range is ‘cone-free?

    • I know right? ITCHY HORSE. You can’t make that kind of stuff up man. 😀
You and me both my friend! I rarely wear eye makeup these days as my eyes sting for days after removal. Yes, this range is cone-free as is pretty much all of their products. In some places this line is available ONLY by a physician, so it’s serious stuff.

      • 😮 😮 holy god that sounds amazing. I always thought there were ‘cones in Avene stuff — they’ve been present in every ingredients list I’ve looked at so far!

I must begin to look harder.

  • Liz

LOLLLLLLLL – love the horse origin story!

We have completely opposite skin. Mine loves hot water and is extremely tolerant of most ingredients. I think the only thing that made it freak out is strong Vitamin C. So glad that Avene works well! I’ve been recommending it to my youngest sister who has dry skin. Not to this level I think but pretty close during winter.

    • I know! Poor horsey!
Yup. My skin used to be like yours though! It could take ANYTHING and that wasn’t that long ago! It’s been this year I’ve been having trouble. This would be perfect for her, as there’s nothing to irritate at all.

  • LOL, the horse was probably so excited! Sheeba itches a lot. We haven’t quite figured out what it is – we thought maybe a food allergy, but I don’t think it is. She has the most amazingly luxuriously soft fur, though, too, lol, so I don’t really understand what’s happening. Probably because she drinks like two gallons of water every day T_T

I only tried one Avene thing – it’s the Ystheal range. I only use it maybe once a week because it’s got retinaldehydes, but I don’t know if it’s actually doing anything, lol.

    • Poor Sheba baby. I drink a lot of water too just like her. Maybe it’s just a nervous habit?
I haven’t ventured into anything else from the brand yet, but I intend too. Yeah I wonder if I could take their retinol at all? I am curious, but my skin just hates the stuff.

  • I’m so glad this line is working so well for you! I’ve yet to be disappointed in anything from Avene. The spray water was a wonder this summer for my skin when I got sunburned, and it revived my hair when it was shorter and I was able to wear it wavy. I really want to go to the Centre in France and have a hydrotherapy bath and then emollient creme body wrap! YAS! Also, I need to know the horse’s name. LOL! I bet it was Crepes. 😉 Loved the little history lesson!

I wish I knew his name too! I’m going to have to research it now LOL!

Let’s go bathe together in the healing waters of Avene some day!

  • dowantmakeup

Whoa that’s quite a neat story! I bought the thermal water after hearing stories about the hydrotherapy centres, but unfortunately I never noticed a difference personally. Avene makes an eczema care line called Trixera which was my staple before I moved on to LUSH Celestial. So glad the Tolerance line is helping your skin heal!

Also lolol you truly are made to live in Canada! It’s surprising to hear about such an extreme reaction to hot water!

  • Now that is a really cool background story right there 😀 I’ve tried a couple of Avène products but so far nothing has really blown me off my feet yet.

  • Oh I am glad to hear that Avene range agrees with you! I do not have sensitive skin but I remember truly enjoying Tolerance when I had a mini set.
And the thermal water spray? I’ve using it for many years. A must for me. 🙂

  • I really like the Avene Gentle Toner and I’m considering buying the Thermal Water as more of a multipurpose product. How good is it at setting makeup?
An itchy horse, I don’t think any other product line has a better origin story. 😉
