Kat Von D Holiday Palettes have a cult following, and for good reason! They are usually really great! This year’s offering is the Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book($66). If you judge an eye shadow palette by its cover, then this one looks like a winner, hey?
The Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book is great value. You get 24 eye shadows arranged into six quad colour stories. There’s a plastic covering that’s attached to the palette that has all the eyeshadow names printed on it.
I find that rather annoying? Why is it attached? It just gets in my way Kat! I’d rather it be a removable sheet. I mean the names of each shade are printed on the back of the palette, so I don’t need that sheet ALL the time.
I’m surprised at how many nudes and neutrals are in the Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book. Usually her palettes are filled with loads of colour. I guess because you’re supposed to use the shadows as “quads”, Kat felt the need to have a light neutral base shade in each one. But I think there’s too many. You’ll see what I mean when I swatch. I’ve never had an eyeshadow palette with so many shades that kind of blend right into my skin tone! Also, I didn’t swatch them in the supposed quads, I swatched them by row. That’s how I saw the colours going together in my mind. Yeah, my mind works differently. But you already knew that, right? RIGHT. So let’s get this Swatchy Time started!
Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book Swatchy Time!

As you can see, there’s quite an array of matte, pearl, shimmer, and iridescent finishes. BUT there’s a lot of glitter. Like, A LOT. I don’t get why brands think we want all the glitter? If there’s one shadow finish I HATE it’s mattes with GLITTER. LIKE WHY. I want a matte to be MATTE. Is that so hard? Sigh. The shimmer shades are really nice, the mattes are kind of chalky except for the orange shade Mandala-it’s STUNNING. The pearls aren’t bad, and some of the iridescence shades swatch horribly. To be honest, MOST of the palette doesn’t swatch well. It doesn’t feel like a normal Kat Von D palette at all. The amazing quality that usually makes her holiday palettes so covetable isn’t really there when you feel the shadows in the Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book.
But on the eye, they DO work. You need a primer for sure. Those iridescent shades work better if you pat them on the eye-don’t blend them otherwise you’ll have trouble. Although, I did use Gothica on my lower lash line in that first oranges look and it did work as you can see. The navy Estrella shade in the second look I patted on. I had to be very careful blending it out. Craft is the green iridescent shade on my bottom lash line in the last look, and it too needs care. The glitter particles in the iridescent shades are big. And while the finished look is pretty and sparkly, they are a bit of a pain to apply.
I’m kind of torn about the Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book. I think the problem is there’s been some inconsistency in the production, because some people have palettes where some of the shades are really bad quality-wise. This one I got isn’t SO bad. But it’s still not Kat Von D quality that’s for sure. WAY too much glitter for my taste. Applying the shadows you get loads of fallout too and glitter all over the face doesn’t make Tracy a happy blogger. But the end result is pretty, hey? Is it worth getting? I’m not sure. I think if you are a huge Kat Von D fan, then maybe take the chance? Especially during the Sephora Family and Friends sale which I’m pretty sure is next week. You might get one like mine. If not, you can return it. You gotta love Sephora for that. You can order the Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book HERE if it’s something that you think will work for you!
Are you a huge Kat Von D eyeshadow palette fan? Marky usually is. I haven’t showed her this one since she’s not here as you know LOL, but I don’t think she’d go for this one to be honest. Where’s the red eyeshadow this year? There’s always a red! I’m pining for one now!
