Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book

Kat Von D Holiday Palettes have a cult following, and for good reason! They are usually really great! This year’s offering is the Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book($66). If you judge an eye shadow palette by its cover, then this one looks like a winner, hey?

The Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book is great value. You get 24 eye shadows arranged into six quad colour stories. There’s a plastic covering that’s attached to the palette that has all the eyeshadow names printed on it.

I find that rather annoying? Why is it attached? It just gets in my way Kat! I’d rather it be a removable sheet. I mean the names of each shade are printed on the back of the palette, so I don’t need that sheet ALL the time.

I’m surprised at how many nudes and neutrals are in the Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book. Usually her palettes are filled with loads of colour. I guess because you’re supposed to use the shadows as “quads”, Kat felt the need to have a light neutral base shade in each one. But I think there’s too many. You’ll see what I mean when I swatch. I’ve never had an eyeshadow palette with so many shades that kind of blend right into my skin tone! Also, I didn’t swatch them in the supposed quads, I swatched them by row. That’s how I saw the colours going together in my mind. Yeah, my mind works differently. But you already knew that, right? RIGHT. So let’s get this Swatchy Time started!

As you can see, there’s quite an array of matte, pearl, shimmer, and iridescent finishes. BUT there’s a lot of glitter. Like, A LOT. I don’t get why brands think we want all the glitter? If there’s one shadow finish I HATE it’s mattes with GLITTER. LIKE WHY. I want a matte to be MATTE. Is that so hard? Sigh. The shimmer shades are really nice, the mattes are kind of chalky except for the orange shade Mandala-it’s STUNNING. The pearls aren’t bad, and some of the iridescence shades swatch horribly. To be honest, MOST of the palette doesn’t swatch well. It doesn’t feel like a normal Kat Von D palette at all. The amazing quality that usually makes her holiday palettes so covetable isn’t really there when you feel the shadows in the Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book.

But on the eye, they DO work. You need a primer for sure. Those iridescent shades work better if you pat them on the eye-don’t blend them otherwise you’ll have trouble. Although, I did use Gothica on my lower lash line in that first oranges look and it did work as you can see. The navy Estrella shade in the second look I patted on. I had to be very careful blending it out. Craft is the green iridescent shade on my bottom lash line in the last look, and it too needs care. The glitter particles in the iridescent shades are big. And while the finished look is pretty and sparkly, they are a bit of a pain to apply.

Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book

I’m kind of torn about the Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book. I think the problem is there’s been some inconsistency in the production, because some people have palettes where some of the shades are really bad quality-wise. This one I got isn’t SO bad. But it’s still not Kat Von D quality that’s for sure. WAY too much glitter for my taste. Applying the shadows you get loads of fallout too and glitter all over the face doesn’t make Tracy a happy blogger. But the end result is pretty, hey? Is it worth getting? I’m not sure. I think if you are a huge Kat Von D fan, then maybe take the chance? Especially during the Sephora Family and Friends sale which I’m pretty sure is next week. You might get one like mine. If not, you can return it. You gotta love Sephora for that. You can order the Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book HERE if it’s something that you think will work for you!

Are you a huge Kat Von D eyeshadow palette fan? Marky usually is. I haven’t showed her this one since she’s not here as you know LOL, but I don’t think she’d go for this one to be honest. Where’s the red eyeshadow this year? There’s always a red! I’m pining for one now!

*product sent by PR for review, thoughts are mine as always!

  • That compact is gorgeous, but I’m sorry to hear the quality isn’t there! Especially with the stash I have, I really can’t get something that isn’t top-notch. I do really like the looks you came up with along with Covenant though! It seems to flash a little green, unless my eyes are cheating me 😉

    • It does flash green good eye Sunny!
Yeah, I’m the same. If it’s too much work I end up not using it and giving it a new home!

  • Wow, Division and Gothica shades are absolutely amazing! But I see what you mean by too many neutral transition/highlighter shades, especially in the 5th row from the top. I don’t actually own anything from Kat Von D and I’m never drawn to the brand when I swatch in Sephora, but I’ll have look next time I’m in a store!

    • They are but SO much work. SO much fallout.
This palette is just meh for me. If you’re gonna look check out the monarch palette!

  • I really want to love Kat Von D products. I just haven’t taken the plunge into the line yet because everything reviews as hit or miss. The Studded Kiss lipsticks, the quality of eyeshadows in this palette… I just don’t know. And why the heck aren’t the names simply printed under each eyeshadow? I’m not a fan of the loose sheet with names (ahem…looking at you, TF Chocolate Bar), but this method seems just as annoying, if not more so.

    • Yeah, it’s like WHY? Why not just print it on the package! You’re right!
I do love SOME of her stuff. Her blushes are great actually! As are most of her liners and usually her shadows too. That Monarch palette is REALLY good.

  • Havent tried any KVD stuff before. The range of colours is great, but many of the swatches does disappoint. Your looks are awesome though!!

  • Liz

I don’t do giant palettes and KVD is never really on my radar. I heard mixed reviews as well, but I think that for those who love big palettes, this is still pretty good value. 🙂

  • Toya

If I were basing my purchasing on your looks alone I’d be SOLD, Tracy! But as it stands, I did not love the holiday palette from last year (I might have a handful of shades left [depotted] from it), and so I had no intentions of getting this year’s palette, so as much as you’re WERKING the shades, I’m not into it. And it sounds like that’s probably my best bet, eh? And like Liz said, these palettes are MASSIVE! Maybe if I was a good girl and only ever bought this and no other shadows the entire year…but ehhhhh that’s not happening!

    • LOL thanks hahaha, but yeah-I think it’s a skip for sure unless you LOVE her stuff!

  • Too big for me, but I like the 4th quad a lot.
Sorry to hear that you’re not completely happy with the formula. You sure created some smoldering sexy eyes there, though! 🙂

    • Yeah it’s a big one!
Thanks! I try! It’s just not quite up to par as her other palettes!

  • LOL why is the sheet attached? Who thought that was a good idea?

That orange is gorgeous! But I have never tried any and I want my palette purchase of the season to be the MJ one, lol.

    • I haven’t seen the MJ one! Is it nice?

      • I hope so, haha! I ordered it with FF. It’s The Parisienne. I wanted some darker colors and I like the palette I do have already, so I figured I’d give it a shot.

  • rachlovespenguins

Part of me is just a tiny bit glad that this isn’t so stellar- now I won’t be tempted at all! Lol!
I’ve got a couple of her older and smaller palettes and I really like those, though I did de-pot one. That was an….adventure… Hahaha

  • Lily

Haven’t tried this brand before, but I LOVE that smokey green look you created!! Sexy!

  • I’m kind of sad to hear that you’re not 100% happy with the palette 🙁 That said, your eye looks are all GORGEOUS, oh my god Tracy!

  • I’m pretty sad that this palette is just meh 🙁 I was kind of waiting for it to come out, since I missed last year’s Spellbinding Eyeshadow book. I love the looks you’ve created though!

  • Your top photo on this post is glorious! So pretty! I love the looks you were able to put together. You make me want to go play with eyeshadows RIGHT NOW. I don’t get the plastic sheet. Just PRINT the shadow names under the pans and we’re golden! This is becoming a major turn-off for me – unlabeled shadows. NARSissist palette, I’m looking at you. KvD eyeshadows are usually SO solid, but this one just swatches all over the map. :/
