Screw Makeup Rules-I’m Never Matching My Lipliner & Lipstick Again!

It’s been driving me NUTS. All year long to be honest-well, the almost 7 months that have passed(HOLY HECK, is time flying by as quickly for you as it is for me?) What’s been driving me nuts you ask? Orange Lipstick. You know, it’s a HUGE makeup trend. And normally I don’t really care all that much about makeup trends to be honest. But I really LIKE orange. A lot! But it looks just all shades of wrong on me. So it’s been a thorn in my makeup side to not be able to participate in this makeup trend.

So the other day, I decided to try something different. Something against ALL the makeup rules. It was like a last ditch effort to make orange lipstick wearable for me.

HEYYY? I LIKE IT! I think it works! Can ya’ see what I did there?

First I took my MUFE Aqua Lip Waterproof Lipliner Pencil 17C which is the BEST orange lip liner in existence. Seriously, you know I don’t lie. THEN, I took the fabulous Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid Lipstick in #885 Vibrant Mandarin and layered that over top. And the Kicker? I took my unused and unloved(I don’t’ know why, but I forget about this gem) MAC Magenta Lipliner and then lined my lips with that hot, purpley pink. And it WORKS. At least I think it does haha! 😀  Here’s the swatches of the colours, so you can see them in their original, almost boring state.  😛

And who said your lipliner HAS to blend in with your lipstick anyways? You know how I’ve been loving a more graphic eye look lately? Well, how about a more graphic LIP LOOK? I say YES. Screw the makeup rules! Makeup should be FUN.

Let’s do another makeup experiment, shall we? Humour me. Since I quit working, this is ALL the science I get to do lately…

How about my FAVOURITE Red lipstick(which was kind of unwearable for me the last year or so) Make Up Forever #43 Moulin Rouge Artist Intense, which is a really bright red? Well, if I pair it with Aqua Lip Waterproof Lipliner Pencil Fuchsia 16C, it works for me!

Take a look!

Whaddaya think? See how the bright pink lip liner makes that red work for me? From far away it makes the red look more blue-based than it actually is.

One of my favourite reds has always been MAC Viva Glam 1. I mean, Hello Ru Paul was the spokesperson. I love her. And the shade? Gorgeous. But to be honest, a little hard to wear for me since it’s such a brown-based red. A 90s red, if you will.
But I decided to pair it with MAC Magenta lip liner, and YES.

I kind of like the combo!

I like it! And it means I can wear Viva Glam 1 again! Who knew?

So what I’m trying to get at in this makeup experiment of mine, is SCREW the makeup rules. Do what works for YOU. Makeup should be fun! And what’s more fun than experimenting with colour?

What lip liner/lipstick combos will you try this week? I challenge you all to come up with a combo you’d never dream to think of pairing! Let’s get BOLD BABY! Post them to Instagram and Twitter and use the hashtag #BreakTheLipLinerRules and let’s start a new makeup revolution! DO IT. Make me proud!

  • This is a very interesting post. I would have never thought of wearing a purple liner with orange lipstick but you are right, it works. It would look even cooler if you would see it a little more, on the sides, like an ombre effect, but like that it is not shouting but looking nice. I think you created a new trend, lol, I mean it. By “match your lipstick to the liner” people think about same color family but darker/lighter liner, which I think doesn’t work. Especially a darker color from the same family as a liner looks so old fashioned. But you selected another color family, which is another trend. I am definitely going to try it out!

    • Thanks Sara!! I know, I hate that darker lip liner old fashioned look too. I think if you’re gonna make your lip liner visible, then go all out and do a totally different shade!
I can hardly wait to see what you come up with!

  • Heeeey this is fun! I don’t have that many liners at all, but let me look through my stash and see what I can come up with!

  • Sherry Proch

You go girl! I am guaranteed to get a laugh and different point of view from your blog and I love it! Thanks 🙂

  • Hells yeah!! You rock that mixy matchy! I would have never thought of a purple liner with orange lips, but I likey! I’m not big on liners, but I do like the ombre lip thing, so might steal your mixy matchy idea for that <3

  • rachlovespenguins

Nice ombre effect! I don’t think twice about wearing two colours of lipstick (my take on the “add gloss to the center to suggest fuller lips” thing, since I don’t actually like wearing lipstick and gloss together) so this makes sense to me. I don’t own any lipliner though. For real. None. Wow I am all sorts of beauty fail lately, lol!

    • Thanks! LOL, hahaha there’s loads of great drugstore ones though! I kind of hated lipliner, but know? I want to get more and do more combos!

      • rachlovespenguins

I know, I know…. It’s just that when I’m standing there in the aisle, all of a sudden lipliner seems so…..boring. LOL
Maybe I’ll just order some from Ulta or something. Then I don’t have to stand in the aisle, distracted by other things. I can sit here in my comfy chair and get distracted instead! 😛

  • Liz

Love the way you think outside the box! I think you look great with red and orange lips regardless of the liners.

    • Thanks! I try sometimes haha!
Awww, thanks but I felt they were to much and clashy, but with the liners I really like them so much better!

  • Tracy, that orange lip looks AWESOME on you! And so, so cool.

  • You are rocking these lips! My favourite is that red with the bright pink lip liner. WOWZA. I love it Tracy! Such a creative way to wear lipstick. 🙂

  • Vanessa

This is really cool — you look awesome.
I’ve been doing something kind of similar, too 🙂

I really like my bright lipsticks, but don’t think they are appropriate for my work. I also knew about the Korean lipstick only on the inner area / center of your lips thing.

Then BAM, I decided to put a tame lipstick (nude, or pink, something natural) all over my lips, then just smudge the bright lipstick in the center. I get a little punch of color that I love, but it’s still subtle enough for work. It’s also completely fuss free. I like it. 🙂

  • The Moulin Rouge lip with that bright liner really glows!

  • You totally rocked that orange lip!

  • Good for you, Tracy!
The second combo looks especially pretty.
I am all about screwing the conventional makeup rules (although my looks are usually conventional). They say no blue eyeshadows on blue eyes, but I do that all the time with my blue contacts, for example. It looks pretty on a naturally blue-eyed gal like you, so why not? 😉

    • I agree! I love wearing blue eyeshadow. I never payed attention to that rule ever haha! Guess I’ve been a makeup rebel my whole life!

  • Lily

Screw the makeup rules indeed! All these mismatched liners actually match very well 🙂

  • Efrain

I’m happy that you look pretty healthy in the pics, also that double color in your lips looks awesome; I’ll tell mom to try it.

  • I REALLY like this!!! I don’t actually own any lip liners -_- but now I want some just so I can do the mismatched look!

  • Love this. I am going to think of something crazy. Just watch. I can’t wait to get home from work and play with my makeup now thanks Tracy!!

  • I think this looks great! Such a fun, simple way to add some extra interest to the lips, an almost ombre effect. Will have to try this! xo

  • Heyyyy it really does work :-O Awesome, Tracy! If I had a lip liner collection I’d start experimenting right this second.

  • Gaelle

Love that second combo. I know you don’t lie!

  • Lydia

Holy Lips Batman! This experiment is genius! I am soooo trying this this week, especially the magenta with red. Thanks for the tips!

  • Great post! This is awesome. I LOVE all of your lip combo platters, they are gorgeous and special! Now I want to crack out the liner parade and get to booty shakin’! 🙂
