Sephora Upside Down Mascara Review, Thoughts and Ramblings

If I have to think about it, the one makeup product I test out the most has to be mascara. I think I’ve seen just about everything they could possible think of when re-inventing it. But it still kind of amazes me every single time they think of a way to change mascara up.

But I didn’t see this one coming. Nope. Not one bit.

Sephora Upside Down Mascara

Sephora Upside Down Mascara ($26 CDN) comes out soon in January-this cold, dreary birthday month of mine makes me laugh as most of the spring makeup collections launch right now, yet it’s WINTER in most of the northern hemisphere. I don’t think it’s EVER been above 0C on my birthday, which is January 18th. I’ll be 47 years old that day HOLY HECK. But that’s another conversation better left for another day. We’re talking weird mascaras now, right? 🙂

Ok, let’s take a closer look at the Sephora Upside Down Mascara. To tell you the truth, I really don’t get WHY it’s called upside down mascara? Maybe I’m just too old or something-but if you get it PLEASE tell me.

The packaging is EXQUISITE. Probably my favourite in AGES when it comes to a mascara. I mean look at it:

It looks almost like a Genie lamp-give it a rub and you’ll get the lashes of your dreams, hey? 🙂 (I think I watch too many Disney cartoons…)

So, as you can see, there are two wands-YES TWO-attached like tweezers on the Sephora Upside Down Mascara. One is hourglass-shaped, and the other is pretty straight.

Well, you can use each wand separately if you should so choose to. The bottom straight wand is absolutely AMAZING on bottom lashes, defining and separating like it should. The hourglass one used on the top lashes will curl, define and adds lovely length to your lashes.

And it does do that! I didn’t curl my lashes at all prior to application, so you can see it does a good job at lifting and holding curl as well. The formula is rather perfect-not too dry, not too wet.  Just enough oomph to add some volume and thickness and length to lashes.

Now, the other way you can use the Sephora Upside Down Mascara is like this:

I know, it’s scary but keep looking as I give it a SQUEEZE:

Sephora Upside Down Mascara.jpg

NEAT, hey? Yeah, but as neat as this mascara-tweezer action is, it’s rather messy to be honest. MASCARA GETS EVERYWHERES I CANNOT LIE. I cleaned up the mess for you. Yet, the effects of using said tweezer double wand action are undeniable. The left eye looks SO MUCH better, non?

Sephora Upside Down Mascara-.jpg

Sephora Upside Down Mascara-

Right? See the curling action? The difference in length? It’s kind of amazing! But, I can’t lie and say it was easy. There was a lot of mascara flung around my eye that needed to be wiped off for pics. YET, that doesn’t bother me so much.

Why, you may ask?

Well, I’m kind of on a no-eyeshadow kick at the momento, since most disagree with me lately. So it’s easy to clean up the mess the Sephora Upside Down Mascara double wand action leaves. BUT if I’d have spent some time on a smokey eye, I’d have been just a little perturbed at the mascara mess left after I spent my morning blending my eyeshadows into perfection.

Which as you can tell, leaves me torn in giving you all a verdict. I mean, it’s a decent mascara using both wands separately and I love it that way, make no mistake. BUT I can’t deny that it’s a pain in the arse when using both wands together to get the lovely effect I’ve experienced.

Would I purchase the Sephora Upside Down Mascara on my own? See, this is the BIG question I always ask when something is sent to me to review, and I do not take it lightly! I think long and hard about it, believe me. And my answer today is YES. I do like the mascara formula. I do like how it looks on my lashes, and I like how it performs-no smudging, no flaking, etc., even through an hour of Zumba, which I am addicted to btw. SO MUCH FUN SWEATING I TELL YA.  I just wish Sephora Upside Down Mascara didn’t leave a mess like it does when using the tweezer-action. BUT I can live with that, because that’s ME.

Can YOU?

What do YOU think? Are you willing to try all these new-fangled-do-hickey mascaras and subject your lashes to some experimentation? Or are you pretty much married to a mascara wand/formula at the moment? If there’s one makeup product I hold NO allegiance to is any mascara at the moment. It’s the one product I don’t pledge my undying love to and use forever and ever amen. Do you?

  • Hey Tracy we’re gonna be 47 YO “twins” for a few months! Now onto that mascara – glad you ‘fessed up about the mess! It’s a very rare day indeed for me to go without eyeshadow so the tweezer approach of application wouldn’t work for me. Cool concept though!

  • HAHAHA OMG if I tried this thing there’d be mascara on my eyeballs and my contacts and my bangs and my eyebrows…HAHAHAHA I can’t even. I have issues with the normal mascara wands! LOL.

I have to say, though, that I have to stick with tubing mascaras, because it’s the only thing that doesn’t smudge on me!

    • TracyBeautyReflections

Tubing rocks if you have smudging issues. I don’t. Kind of freaks me out to take tubing mascaras off tbh. The whole pulling action-no likey. But I so appreciate their usefulness! And you wouldnt-it’s not so bad using this one!

  • oh man i would totally stab my eye out with this. well maybe not “totally” but you know. but it looks awesome on you. and sorry that eyeshadows aren’t agreeing with you – is it the glitter thing getting in your eyes??

    • TracyBeautyReflections

HAHA honestly you wouldn’t! stab HAHA. Yep. Totally the glitter and stuff. My eyes get all weepy. HATE eyeshadows right now.

      • sad, get some not glittery ones!! but anyways… i might stab…. i managed to stick an eyeshadow brush in my eye a few days ago. not sure if i was just retarded or rushing? lol or both? lol

      • TracyBeautyReflections

Yeah, even the non glittery ones bug me. I think I’m getting old Joyce LOL! HAHA you are so cute.

      • lol thanks. aww boo the nonglittery ones bother you? do your eyes get watery or what??? crazy

      • TracyBeautyReflections

Watery like NUTS. I just give up Joyce LOL!

  • rachlovespenguins

I hold no mascara allegiance either. I thought I did but then we had to part ways on not the best of terms (developed a new ingredient sensitivity, booooooo) so I’m a free agent once again.
I’ll also try any wand or formula if it looks intriguing. I don’t mind messy either as I make a mess out of the normal stuff! I actually always do my mascara first so I can clean up any smudges before I spend time on eyeshadow. I’m way better at not getting other makeup on my mascara than I am at not getting mascara on my other makeup. Lol

    • TracyBeautyReflections

HAHA I’m glad someone is like me! Mascara Allegiance hinges on thin ice I think anyways, right? There’s ALWAYS something new coming out. I’m the same way again-much rather do my mascara first as well!

      • rachlovespenguins

*nods* Definite thin ice. Because you’re right, there is always something new for the adventurous. And besides, as married as you can be to a formula, it’s like if you even look at the tube sideways or apply it in a draft or some other seemingly inconsequential thing/situation, the consistency chances and it’s no longer the same product anymore. That alone is enough to continually have me trying new things. Well that and my constant magpie reaction of, “ooooooooooooo look at THAT brush!!!” Hahahahaha

I am amazed at how many people do mascara as a last step. And equally amazed at how many tutorials and step-by-step eye looks don’t actually show the application of said last step mascara. I think they do it on purpose because they know you’ve only got a fifty-fifty chance of applying it without making a mess. 😛

      • TracyBeautyReflections

Haha I love ya Rachel! My thoughts as well when I see new things: SHINY NEW THING!
Yeah I think EVERYONE gets mascara all over their eye makeup. Nobody fesses up is all!

  • I..I can’t even process this properly. THIS IS INSANELY COOL.

    • TracyBeautyReflections

It is, right? Just messy cool LOL.

  • this is soooooo awesome!!!!!!! very ambitious but it works!!!!

    • TracyBeautyReflections

😀 I was as surprised as you!

  • Lily

Oh WOW! I’d get it just to try this double wand tweezer action!

    • TracyBeautyReflections

HAHA-it’s kind of neat squeezing them and pulling up!

  • Hey Tracy, whoa this one is a little scary but interesting! I never really thought this would work! I probably can’t do messy though. I’m really not big on having to clean anything up!

    • TracyBeautyReflections

Yeah, it’s a mess! Better for no eye makeup days!

  • dowantmakeup

This looks SO COOL. I haven’t been wearing much eyeshadow either, so a little mess doesn’t scare me :>

    • TracyBeautyReflections

😀 You too, hey? Me and eyeshadows do not love each other anymore lol!

  • This looks pretty awesome, I would give this a go!

    • TracyBeautyReflections

      :D:D It’s an experience!

  • Wow – despite being warned of the mess, lol, I know that I will have to try this! I always coat the topside of the upper lashes when I’m doing makeup on someone else, but it is a harder feat to do this on myself. I bet with some practice we could get the hang of it?? I LOVE Zumba, too, btw. Never thought I’d sweat that much and not be cranky afterward. 🙂

    • TracyBeautyReflections

😀 Yes-I’m warning you! With this it coats your lashes all the way around you are right.
I KNOW-me neither! I’m actually happy after I workout and want to do more! WTH is that? hahaha

  • Liz

LOLL!!! This needed to be a YouTube tutorial. 😀 There’s definitely a difference between the two eyes and I can’t believe this hokey looking thing WORKS. I don’t think it’ll work on me because my lashes are extra difficult, but I would try it if I can find a clean tester at Sephora. ;O

    • TracyBeautyReflections

Well, THAT’ll never happen LOL. It does a pretty good job at lifting though you’d be surprised!

  • Jules

Very interesting mascara. Would love to try it, but can imagine it’s a bit tricky the first time. The effect is awsome I think.

    • TracyBeautyReflections

It’s really tricky you are right! But it sure does lift up them lashes!

  • TracyBeautyReflections

It’s not out yet-in a couple of weeks so keep looking!

  • Gaelle

I like how it looks but let’s be honest it all sounds a bit of a faff!

    • TracyBeautyReflections

      I know! But look haha!

  • Sara Hawkins

I love the look of this but it seems like it is too much work for me. I like quick and easy makeup

    • TracyBeautyReflections

Yeah it’s a job to clean up the mess!

  • this is such an odd product but results can’t be denied and your lashes look AMAZING. im really curious about how it’ll actually work in person and it’s just gimmicky enough that i might try it…though the mascara everywhere thing might not be that great….

    • TracyBeautyReflections

Thanks! Yeah it’s not neat that’s for sure!

  • Hmmm I don’t know what to think of this. Very interesting and there’s no doubt your lashes look beautiful! (But your lashes always look good)
I don’t think I would try this anytime soon. It’s just that I keep trying new mascaras then come back to the original Voluminous WP. It’s kinda sad.

    • TracyBeautyReflections

Hahaha i’m glad you have a HG mascara! I wish I did. I try so many, so it’s hard to find one I absolutely love as they all do something different.

  • When I saw your teaser pic of this, I was scared. Seriously. But now I understand it and boy do I want it. Look at your lashes!! I will just have to do my mascara before my eyeshadow then, but that’s no biggie!

    • TracyBeautyReflections

LOL it is scary! True! This might change our makeup ways I’m thinking!

  • That’s kind of crazy and different in a fun way! Though I doubt I’d have much success with the double wand squeezer trick since I have 4 eyelashes and very small lids! I also have to give you two points for working in the word “flung”. Love. Excited for your birthday soon! It’s the same day as my dad’s so it’s easy for me to remember. Early thanks for being born! 🙂 And yes – the spring makeup promos are making me feel like warm weather is just around the bend – but it’s not! I’m already wearing spring-y colors just because they make me happy during post-Christmas winter! Loves yous!

    • TracyBeautyReflections

MAN, do I LOVES you too! Wow so cool your dad has the same BD! I love hearing that! FLUNG. It’s a good word, right? Not used nearly enough I say.

  • I’m with you on this one, Tracy. I looooove that there are two wands and the formula looks really great in your lashes!!!

    • TracyBeautyReflections

      Thanks Love! It’s something else!

  • Jayne

I’d get this just to say I’d tried it. Kind of like the new Avon one. You just HAD to give it a whirl!

    • TracyBeautyReflections

      I agree!

First of all, THANK YOU for talking Disney and reminding me how I came across your blog – when you and Larie used to do Disney-themed FOTD posts! ~good memories~

Now, onto the mascara. I know what you mean about sometimes dealing with the hassle of a product when it just does such a good final job! But, while I *might* spend the money, I usually don’t. I’d just rather find a fab formula that doesn’t require a lot of finagling around, and so I just keep shopping for that, rather than doing a repeat buy. But that’s just fickle ol’ me 🙂

    • TracyBeautyReflections

Hahaha I MISS DOING THOSE. 😀
No I totally get it! It’s just being logical and that’s totally cool!
