If I have to think about it, the one makeup product I test out the most has to be mascara. I think I’ve seen just about everything they could possible think of when re-inventing it. But it still kind of amazes me every single time they think of a way to change mascara up.
But I didn’t see this one coming. Nope. Not one bit.
Sephora Upside Down Mascara ($26 CDN) comes out soon in January-this cold, dreary birthday month of mine makes me laugh as most of the spring makeup collections launch right now, yet it’s WINTER in most of the northern hemisphere. I don’t think it’s EVER been above 0C on my birthday, which is January 18th. I’ll be 47 years old that day HOLY HECK. But that’s another conversation better left for another day. We’re talking weird mascaras now, right?
Ok, let’s take a closer look at the Sephora Upside Down Mascara. To tell you the truth, I really don’t get WHY it’s called upside down mascara? Maybe I’m just too old or something-but if you get it PLEASE tell me.
The packaging is EXQUISITE. Probably my favourite in AGES when it comes to a mascara. I mean look at it:
It looks almost like a Genie lamp-give it a rub and you’ll get the lashes of your dreams, hey? (I think I watch too many Disney cartoons…)
So, as you can see, there are two wands-YES TWO-attached like tweezers on the Sephora Upside Down Mascara. One is hourglass-shaped, and the other is pretty straight.
Now, you’re probably saying-WHAT THE HECK DO I DO WITH THIS CONTRAPTION TRACY?
Well, you can use each wand separately if you should so choose to. The bottom straight wand is absolutely AMAZING on bottom lashes, defining and separating like it should. The hourglass one used on the top lashes will curl, define and adds lovely length to your lashes.
And it does do that! I didn’t curl my lashes at all prior to application, so you can see it does a good job at lifting and holding curl as well. The formula is rather perfect-not too dry, not too wet. Just enough oomph to add some volume and thickness and length to lashes.
Now, the other way you can use the Sephora Upside Down Mascara is like this:
I know, it’s scary but keep looking as I give it a SQUEEZE:
NEAT, hey? Yeah, but as neat as this mascara-tweezer action is, it’s rather messy to be honest. MASCARA GETS EVERYWHERES I CANNOT LIE. I cleaned up the mess for you. Yet, the effects of using said tweezer double wand action are undeniable. The left eye looks SO MUCH better, non?
Right? See the curling action? The difference in length? It’s kind of amazing! But, I can’t lie and say it was easy. There was a lot of mascara flung around my eye that needed to be wiped off for pics. YET, that doesn’t bother me so much.
Why, you may ask?
Well, I’m kind of on a no-eyeshadow kick at the momento, since most disagree with me lately. So it’s easy to clean up the mess the Sephora Upside Down Mascara double wand action leaves. BUT if I’d have spent some time on a smokey eye, I’d have been just a little perturbed at the mascara mess left after I spent my morning blending my eyeshadows into perfection.
Which as you can tell, leaves me torn in giving you all a verdict. I mean, it’s a decent mascara using both wands separately and I love it that way, make no mistake. BUT I can’t deny that it’s a pain in the arse when using both wands together to get the lovely effect I’ve experienced.
Would I purchase the Sephora Upside Down Mascara on my own? See, this is the BIG question I always ask when something is sent to me to review, and I do not take it lightly! I think long and hard about it, believe me. And my answer today is YES. I do like the mascara formula. I do like how it looks on my lashes, and I like how it performs-no smudging, no flaking, etc., even through an hour of Zumba, which I am addicted to btw. SO MUCH FUN SWEATING I TELL YA. I just wish Sephora Upside Down Mascara didn’t leave a mess like it does when using the tweezer-action. BUT I can live with that, because that’s ME.
What do YOU think? Are you willing to try all these new-fangled-do-hickey mascaras and subject your lashes to some experimentation? Or are you pretty much married to a mascara wand/formula at the moment? If there’s one makeup product I hold NO allegiance to is any mascara at the moment. It’s the one product I don’t pledge my undying love to and use forever and ever amen. Do you?
